Hornady STEEL Match ammo ??

Looking for feed back on the 55gr. HP, and the 75gr BTHP, that Hornady is offering in .223 Steel Match Ammo. The price looks good enough to invest a few bucks, but I know nothing about this Steel Match Ammo. Thanks

Wolf has had steel ammo for years. Don't try reloading it. For those of us in the reloading business is is just another thorne in our side. If they get past the magnet when sorting brass they can and will jam up the progressive reloader.

Speer (aluminum) and Wolf (steel) cases may be cheeper to make but they are not "range brass friendly" to reloaders.

Inless your gonna be shooting the steel ammo outta an ar style gun Id think twice I had a friend buy a bunch to shoot outta his 223 bolt got maybe 40 rounds thru it and the steel casings started to git stuck in the action and messed up his ejector. The coating on the ammo I think is what was doing all the damage. Just a little heads up

I'd never run it through any thing I own, besides as mentioned before, where's the savings if you can't even reload the case to use it again?

I tried some of this crap in my .45ACP, and while it was decent ammo, (actually super accurate in my pistol) it's non-reloadable which is a waste if you're a reloader. It is cheaper than other "match ammo", but it's because it's in a junk case that you can only throw away. If your running around doing action pistol or other action shooting and don't pick up your empties, than I guess it's fine for that. But I would be a bit cautious of loading steel cased ammo into the chamber of my precision rifle, whether it's polymer coated of not. Steel on steel just seems like a recipe for disaster when it comes to scratching or scuffing up your precision cut chamber, unless you have a chrome plated chamber in an AR, in which case I doubt you could hurt it.

Basically, if you have a chamber which you don't worry about, don't care that you can't reload the empties, or you are running around shooting in some type of action shooting and picking up brass is more of a pain than it's worth, than this stuff might be worth a shot. At $25 for a box of 50 for .223, it is cheap ammo, and likely better than most comparably priced ammo as far as accuracy is concerned. But I think you can load better ammo for less, and that's what I would do.

It was accurate in my 1911, but I can load ammo just as accurate for a lot less as well, so it's up to you if it's worth it or not.

If it was Hornady or steel cased Wolf, I would go with the Hornady.

The steel cased ammo that caused problems was laquer coated and the new polymer coated doesnt seem to cause any problems as far as I am concerned. It works well in good ar's without inferior parts installed.
