Hornady SST

hello gentlemen: I have been reading this forum for quite awhile and have learned a ton of things from you guys. This subject has got me concerned. I have always used hornady bullets in my ruger .270 but with a charge of 58.5 grains of H4831. Now i have changed bullets .. went to Hornady SST 130 grain. The local gun Dude told me that i must load em hot. So i looked up a load in the hornady book. it says 61 grains is max. I am concerned due to the fact that when i seat the bullets... there is some major compression going on. I have never compressed a load like this. So my question is .... how much is too much compression.... how hard should the bullet seat against the powder ? I am thinking that i have brass that is thicker than the test brass for the load. I have not tried to shoot this load yet... awaiting some real opinions by some real shooters.

Agree with the above recommendations. You do not ever want to change bullets and then jump up to book max.

Start at 58 and work up in 1/2gr increments. You will probably find joy at around 60gr with that bullet.

Besides, in a 270 with 130gr, another 50-100fps will not make it kill any better and will only make a slight difference in 'flatness' in the 270's effective range.

I disagree with your "local gun dude" and agree with the other 3 above posters.

I've had very good results with the SST's in the 243, 7mm Mag, 280, 6.5-06, and 30-06. Only tip I could maybe offer is to ignore the crimping ring on the bullet and seat them without crimping to the OAL that shoots well in your rifle. Let us know how it turns out. WD

I agree with WD on the crimp ring, I seat well before that so the crimp ring is visible, (My rifles shoot better there) make sure you don't set your die for a crimp if you don't put the crimp ring at the case mouth!!

well guys.... last night i worked up to the 60 grains.. went to the range today... wow !...... i have never had my 270 shoot that good. the best loads were the ones at 59.8 grains of H4831 could cover 4 shot groups with a quarter. I have come to realize that my local gun dude is a ninny ! i went back to basics an, thats what i will do from this point forward.. no shortcuts. as far as the cannelure goes.... why is it there ?.... i just loaded 10 off the lands and im not sure i need to change them. next i will go practice on some coyotes to see what they will do with some distance.

Another thing to consider when working up H4831 is that a lot of loads near max are compressed loads. Some are quite a bit off compression. But like the others said always work up safely.

The cannelure is there so there is a place to crimp the case mouth onto the bullet so the bullet won't move under heavy recoil.

Not to hijack this thread but is it ever okay to crimp the case mouth without a canalure? Say loading for an AR with 65gr sierra game kings?

I haven't tried it but I have read in several books,...NO!

If you want to crimp any bullet without a canalure get yourself a Lee Factory Crimp Die. It will crimp any bullet anyplace on the bullet. It also has improved accuracy for me in many calibers.

For the 270 with 130 grs bullets my go to load that has worked great in MANY 270s has been 60 grs H-4831.

Regarding the Hornady SST...I believe that the recess in the bullet that several have referred to here as a "crimping groove" is in reality Hornady's Interlock Technology and not a crimping groove at all. According to their website, the groove "locks" the jacket to the core.

Actually, the crimping groove/cannelure and the Interlock are totally separate.

For the vast bulk of deer hunting situations, the SST is all one would ever require in a bullet. Clean killers, good expansion, good penetration, solid accuracy, readily available and they won't hurt your wallet. Had used the std Spire Point to very good effect until the SST hit the market. Terminal performance at 20-300yds between the two is a coin flip when started at 2600-2950fps in various bore sizes. You'll get quarter-sized to golf ball sized exits on ribcage shots and still get full penetration through the vital zone while taking a shoulder, either in or out on 110-240# deer.

Even if somebody handed me several sleeves of another bullet, I'd have a hard time switching when it comes to animals of that body weight.

A+ But i think we should stop pushing these before we push the price up with those Noslers ;D

I stand corrected sir! your are correct.

I misinterpreted what I read on the Hornady web site. It's just hard for me to imagine crimping these 139 SSTs and having them sitting at 200 thousandths off the lands of my 7 Mag.

@ 1holeaddict

Just broke into my last box of 140gr 6.5mm SST's this AM. Looked at the price on the box and it read $16.99 (from Gander). Midway lists them now at $28.99, but it's still a bargain :)

60g of H4831 in the .270 Win with 130g bullets has been a classic load for a long time.

My dad shot a KY 8 pointer (4x4 for you westerners) at 25 yards with a 150g SST from his .270 this past weekend. He hit the onside shoulder and did not get an exit. The deer ran about 60 yards and died. Big damage to the lungs and clipped the lungs. Our SST experience from this weekend.

I would like to ask what is your overall length? The reason i ask 3.20/130 NP with 55 grains IMR4350 and works amazing 1/2-3/4 inch groups @100. I just picked up some hornady 130 sst. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
