Hornady Match 7mm - 162 gr Bullet

I just picked up a couple of boxes of Hornady's new Match bullets in 7mm 162gr. I opened the box and was surprised to see that these bullets come factory pointed. Pulled out an equivalent Amax and had a look at them side by side, very similar looking ogive but the Match appears more tapered toward the nose. It looks (not measured diameters) like the Amax is a little larger/fatter at the pointy end to accommodate the ballistic tip.

Pulled out the digital calipers to check the consistency of the bullet length and was surprised again to find the bullets I measured (10) all less than 2 thou difference in length. The meplats being factory pointed were all very uniform and without a ragged edge. Length is of interest to me because I like using my pointing die to close meplats up as much as is possible. Not much is to be gained by pointing but I went ahead and did it anyway and every bullet came out perfect.

I pulled out my Shehane rifle and the Hornady OAL gauge and re-checked the Amax against my measurement last time and got a measure on the new Match bullet. Using a Hornady bullet comparator the Amax measured 2.440" and the Match was 2.462 just touching the lands. For comparison sake the Berger 180gr VLD measures 2.454" which is in the middle of the 2 Hornady bullets. A measured 22 thou longer OAL for the Match bullet indicates the bullets are similar but certainly not the same dimensions.

I loaded some up the same as the Amax's I have been shooting and will test them out this weekend. I have set them up with a 20 thou jump and will shoot them in a club comp without having done any development work. It might be a complete disaster but dont have time at the moment for testing. Does anyone have any info on shooting the new 162gr Match bullet and in particular what bullet seating jam/jump works best?

The bullets look and measure up as dimensionally being consistent but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, who can tell me how these projectiles go?

Did you get a chance to weight check them ??
The 4 boxes I bought had weights all over the place from a low of 160.2 to a high of 163 .4..
I sent them back and they sent me 4 more a month later with out any explaining of why or a refund on the shipping either..

I checked out the weight of 25 bullets and they varied from 161.1 to 161.7gr, most were around 161.5gr. Not as bad as your initial batch but we dont get the first shipments sent to Australia so it looks like you were unlucky with an early batch? I checked the same number of Amax bullets and they had a tighter weight tolerance only varying around 0.3gr and they were all closer to 162gr than the Match bullets. Maybe the Amax bullets are still their premium target bullet.

I shot both the 162gr Match and the 162gr Amax, back to back yesterday in a club championship match. Its pretty hard to pick any difference in performance between the two of them. My initial thoughts are that I would continue to use either of them at the shorter (out to 600 yards) ranges.

After testing the new Match bullets I dont see any need to changeover from the Amax's to them. There was only a couple of moa wind blowing and I managed a higher score with the Amax bullets. Both bullet types showed no vertical dispersion and the two points I did drop were wind changes that I missed. The bullets went where I pointed them and I shot 100.5 with the Amax and dropped a couple of points with the Match bullets for a 98.3 at 600 metres. This was done without any real load development and the bullets jumped around 20 thou.

My verdict is that Hornady now make two good 162gr, 7mm bullets and you can take your pick, for me I'll stay with the Amax variety.

There's a Savage shooter over on Sniper's Hide that has switched to the BTHP over the A-Max because he found it had less drift & more stability beyond 1000yd from his 7-08. Also gained ~80fps velocity with the BTHP using the identical load, too.

2 targets shot with the 162 BTHP Match bullet this weekend at the IBS 1000yd match at Byers, CO.
As you can see they are crap.

Fired from a 7mm SAUM.

I have been trying to get them to do a 170 to 180gr bullet and the answer is always NO. I know a lot of other shooters have leaned on them to do a heavy seven but I doubt it will ever happen.
The SAUM case is much better suited for the 180s but I can't get the newer Berger VLDs to shoot as well as the Hornadys, 4 year old Bergers shot lights out. After I get rid of the BTHPs I may try some of the Hybrids but I got plenty to last through the year.

Hornady claims a G1 BC of .610, from what I have seen from shooting them I wouild say it isn't less than that.

Thank You David.

Good shooting to you as well, glad you don't have a light gun. ;D

PS
Name has been corrected :-[

Those are some good groups James. I'm a rookie shooter and My grandson and I are shooting against Team Hornady at Yukon, MO. they are consistantly tough competition, with some regular groups in the 4 and 5 inch. They shoot 280 AI using the 162 Amax and now the 162 hpbt. I managed to pull out a win at the last match though using 180 hybrids and my SAUM. I will be trying some of the Hornady byhp, maybe they will help me with my verticle problems. Mike

The need for heavier Hornady Match 7mm - Bullets

There are 177.5 & 189 gr handmade 7mm Vld's out there, but shooters won't pay the price for them. I heard those 7mm's were used by the winner of the 2009 World "F" Class Championship Match held at Bisley U.K.

Gentlemen,
To put the record straight I used standard thin jacket 180vld Bergers, chamber was a 7/300 wsm (with Winchester Brass !!)
I have been experimenting with custom 7mm bullets but have not settled on anything as yet ( still using the 180's at the moment)
Would you believe the WFCC barrel is still going strong 1350 rounds now!

With best regards
Gary Costello

Gary,
Why aren't you using the 7mm bullet you won the 2009 World "F" Class Championship with???????????????
