Hornady Case Feeder Motor - RPM?

I’ve just bought a 2nd hand LNL AP Case Feeder from forum member LRTom. A huge Thank You to Thomas for his help getting this on its way to me here in New Zealand. A genuinely good guy!

But.... this is a 110v and here in NZ we run 220v so I either need to run a 220 to 110 transformer or replace the motor with a 12vdc geared motor. This in my preferred option as the Hornady motors seem to be extremely loud.
Has anyone done this?

Have not done this myself, but you may try the following: google or search on youtube for 3D printed bullet feeders for the Dillon presses. Also look on thingiverse.com - most include the BOM for a complete build that includes the specification, and a source where you can buy similar/replacement motors and gearbox

Here is a link to the motor that is compatible with the Dillon...

Thanks piie. That was one of the motors I was looking at.
The one in the link is 15rpm and I see mention of guys using motors as slow as 4rpm for home built ones.

Can anyone with a case feeder confirm the rough RPM of the Hornady unit?

With the DC motor, you could install a potentiometer to adjust the the speed as well. ie to slow it down if required. Or just add an appropriate size resistor in the circuit.

Stew, the Dillon motor is 4 rpm and the new variable speed motor is 0-8 rpm if that helps. The Hornady is about the same as the old Dillon.

Great point! I was going to do that once I knew the original speed.

Just note - I'm not sure if the motor is replaceable on its own - I got the impression from one of the self-build kit instructions that the motor/gearbox is a unit, and that means you will not only need to get the motor with the correct gearbox rating, but also one with compatible mounting holes for your bullet feeder. There are quite a few different models out there once you start scratching, and the first one you see might look like it will work, but not guaranteed.

Having said that - I'm also pretty sure that the AP case feeder will most likely also just use an "off the shelf" solution, meaning your motor/gearbox unit is probably already a 12v DC unit?

It’ll be 110 volts as the ones in our area are 220vac. But it seems the 220 volt unit is discontinued so maybe they are moving to a 12vdc Motor in the future?
My options are either a 12vdc unit with a speed controller or get a 220v to 110v transformer. I was just hoping someone had done the conversion and could suggest a bolt-in geared motor that fitted nicely.

Can you post a picture of the motor/gearbox - usually there are markings stating its rpm/voltage etc? Not saying you're wrong - I'm just perplexed that they would go with an AC motor?

It’s currently in transit from LA to New Zealand. I don’t expect it for about 10 days.
Maybe someone else can post a pic?

OK, so - there is a chance then that the 110V is only applicable to the main power supply - where it most likely only converts the 110v AC to 12V DC - so, until you can verify that, don't spend money on a new motor - my gut tells me your AP has a 12V DC motor inside already, so you could then just bypass the mains powersupply (which is basically what you planned to do) - but without actually having to replace the existing motor.

Yep. A step down transformer just might be the easiest cheapest option.
Not sure if anyone checked out the price for the motor in the Amazon link but it was worth more that the entire case feeder setup!

If there is a Ham Fest near by, you can usually find a transformer at a good price. I don't know how you get your electricity, but here in the states it usually comes in the house as 240 or 220 and is split at the circuit breaker box. Since you don't need a lot of amperage, a small step down transformer should be a cheap.
