Hornady Bullet Comparator - What do I need?

Is this method shown in the photo below suitable for bullet bearing surface measurement?

I presume I need two bore specific inserts, the silver parts, and two of the red parts. Do you know what Hornady calls the red part? The have two items on their page. One is called a Comparator Body, and the other an Anvil base. See this link:

Can't get these parts locally and will have to order, and want to be sure I get the right part. Thanks for any clarification you can provide. The photos at the Hornady site are not very helpful.

Red part is called a Comparator Body and the silver parts are Bullet Inserts. This is according to Hornady's Catalog.

Sinclair also makes and sells both parts. I like Sinclairs bullet inserts better, they are made from SS where Hornady's are aluminum.

I also prefer the stainless Sinclair inserts (interchangable with the Hornady gauge) over the Hornady/Stoney Point aluminum.

Thanks for the clarification and suggestions. I looked at the Sinclair gauges and they seem to use some hex shaped gauges, with a variety of holes reamed in them for the different bore diameters. However, they are not held by the vernier. Is this not awkward in having to hold three pieces and measuring overall length -- for hundreds of bullets. It would seem more convenient if the gauge blocks were clamped to the vernier?

the cabelas i go to has the hornady and you can get inserts to check headspace also. so if you have one close you may want to check there.

if you are going to check seating depth with them make sure you check both (and any combo)to be sure they measure the same....a shooting buddy has two and they measure different

RonAKA.....you are looking at the Sinclair Hex style bullet comparator. The one with the inserts like you have pictured above is #09-1000 and the inserts are #09-0204, 0224, 0243 etc.

The hex is a little harder to hold everything together when measuring.

You'll find everything you want on page 34 of their current catalog. #2010-B On page 42 they have their headspace bump gages that fit into the same comparator body.

I'm pleased to hear the Sinclair inserts will fit in the Hornady body, it sure "looked" to be the same except for the color and now that I know it will work I'll get some sinclair inserts...

Thanks for the clarification, and the link to the photo of the base anvil kit. Now, I understand what it is, and don't need that part.

Will also check out the Sinclair comparator again, as all I could find was the hex style.
