Hornady Ammo Restriction

I don’t think it’s Hornady, I think it’s the merchant. I wouldn’t shop there if that’s the case. It doesn’t look like anything special, just an ELD match bullet which are pretty available and reloaders are using all the time.

Their disclaimer reads like the leftest mantra as to who should be allowed to own a firearm. Hope this is not deemed political, if so then sorry.

I looked at several other sellers of this product and they too have the same restrictions as to who may purchase the TAP rounds.

the disclaimer said "due to our contract with Hornaday, ect ect" I would guess its just designed to make the mall cops and wantabees want it even more.
Sorry didn’t read the disclaimer, but to what Ray said maybe law enforcement gets a discount, or because it’s labeled as law enforcement ammunition is why.

I think Ray is right I think its a price issue and good that veterans and LEO get a good price.

Law Enforcement IOP Program
Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore is proud to offer the Individual Officer Purchase (IOP) program to support those who protect and serve communities across the United States.

Due to our contract with HORNADY, this particular item is restricted to:

  • Law enforcement agencies and officers
  • Corrections officers
  • Retired officers in good standing
  • Licensed, uniformed security guards/companies
  • Active and retired military personnel

This looks like the same discount program that most stores have. The store I work at has a "First Responder" discount that allows a 10% discount to the same kinds of people as the program lists above.

I've shot a pile of the 6.5 CM 147 grain TAP and Match ammo, the Tap is better in the two rifles I tested, in speaking with a Hornady engineer, he told me the powder in the Tap is less temperature sensitive and because the ammo is designed for MIL/LE applications they do more inspections.

Other sellers have this same ammo for sale to the public (TAP Ammo), but at higher prices. I assume the restriction is for the LE discount.

Originally, the 308 TAP was sold to LE as a non deflective round when shooting thru windshield or other plate glass---but that was a long time ago. I think they may be trying to get some juice off the LE/Military cache.
