Hornady 75 bthp match

I use the same load for both 77 smk and 75 bthp... The 75 bthp has a bit of a longer bearing surface but it didn't make any difference. Just make sure you're not in the lands with the 75 gr Hornady. I also noticed the 75 gr bthp shot as good at 2.260" COAL as they do with being closer to the lands.
Thanks. I will give them a try. I’ve been shooting the 62’s from midsouth for years with good results, and I think that’s a Hornady bullet. I might try the 52’s too, since I mostly shoot 100 yard reduced course matches.

Been using them for years now for XTC shooting, but on the National Match forum there have been others who expressed the poof of the 75. For service rifle shooters we came to the conclusion if you keep them under 2800 they do just fine get them faster and you run the risk of the poof. I would give up a bit of speed in my load for accuracy and find that at 2690-2700fps, Wylde chamber, 7 twist Bartlien barrel is sub MOA which is still better than I can hold, just my 2 cents for what it is worth

I have two uppers for my service rifle.
Upper #1 is on it's third barrel
Upper #2 is on it's second barrel
All 5 of the barrels have shot the 75BTHP well.
My barrels have been two rock river's, one wilson, one kreiger, and one shilen.

The Kreiger was on upper number two when I bought it, and I didn't shoot it much before replacing it (it had 4000rds when I bought it), but I never got any "poofs" and it held the x-ring at 200 and 300.

I'm running them around 2700 or less - it's easier on brass. And I don't feel it gains me much at 200/300yds.

I have a new to me 223 bolt gun barreled action that I haven't shot yet (26in, M24 taper)....we'll see how it does.

The Rock River barrels are Wilson. ;)

Thanks for the info Urban!

They all shot better than me - so no issues there, but the Shilen Ratchet rifled barrel is the easiest cleaning barrel I've ever had. I don't know yet if it will last as long as the Wilsons, but it's been great so far.

I have to reply back about the risk of the POOF for the 75 BTHP... I experienced a few bullets that were either wild fliers or didn't make it to the target this past weekend. I was shooting out to 675 yards and the vertical was all over the place. The load was a 75 BTHP over 22.7 gr H4895, mag length, out of an 18" AR.

I am fairly sure the reason for the potential bullet failure is that the barrel has somewhere in the vicinity of 6500-7000 rounds (it has led a hard life!). On further investigation it looks pretty rough inside. It still shoots OK at 100-200 yards but just isn't holding up at distance... Time for a new tube.

Your speed certainly is on the low node of H4895 so I do not think RPM was an issue.
We know the 75HPBT Match has a thinner jacket than the SMK77 and the Nosler 77 CC.
When I shucked jackets it was in a tight Kreiger 1-7 20" service rifle barrel with 1000 rounds on. I had not been using JB bore paste to maintain the bore, it was a test, (usually ever 400-500 rounds I JB)

My worst day was at 300 reduced course match, hot day in the 90's just finished rapid prone. Head right in to Slow Prone, bullets blowing up 40-50 yds down range.

I was on the hotter side of 23.2 gr but low for H4895 given we use 23.4 and it hammers.

I like the H75 for accuracy and it is a click or two flatter at 300 than the SMK77 but some say its like a cracker jack, one in every box. I stopped using the H75 for big matches. And I no longer have a Kreiger on the service rifle.

Yeah I purposely run a milder load since I don't compete and just want a consistent load that doesn't have pressure issues in the heat. Also I am typically shooting suppressed - there is no way I can keep the bore particularly clean, which doesn't help either.

Earlier in the barrel's life it was shooting the H75's amazingly well. Now I have the difficult task of selecting a new barrel which will hopefully shoot these well, as I have 3k of them stocked up. The prior barrel was a Nordic Components 18" rifle gas (cut from a Wilson blank) that shot really well for a fairly inexpensive barrel. Any suggestions? Was thinking either a Douglas MK12 or one from WOA.

For an AR?
WOA would be a good choice.
CLE has shut down it's commercial business.

I have had the 75 gr Hornady's go poof running them out of a 22" Savage 1/9 twist @ 2,700. This was when the barrel was getting hot. Savage barrels aren't known for having a mirror finish...More like railroad tracks. The barrel had less than 1K rounds.

I ended up getting a Centurion MK12 18" 1/7 twist. Apparently they use Douglas blanks.

I had also looked at one of the 20" Shilen ratchet rifled barrels, but they were only in Service Rifle contour. I may put one of these on another rifle, also to shoot the H75's. I appreciate your feedback about yours.

I will report back with results when I have the barrel swapped.

I tried them for practice bullets in my Ftr rifle. Using my standard load workup procedure they did not work for me, much worse than Berger or SMK.

They were originally introduced back in the late 90s for a heavier short course (200 & 300 yard) bullet for Service Rifle. At the time people were shooting 68s & 69s. At 600 people were shooting Sierra 80s and a few were using JLKs. I have not had a problem with them blowing up, but then again I clean my barrel each time I use it and I'm not afraid to use JB or Rem Clean from time to time. For the most part, my guns are all 6.5 twists or 7 twists.

I like them especially when they get down below 20c per round. Sierra 77s generally are a little more consistent for me but I have had the 75s shoot very well in a good barrel. Its worth noting there are 2 kinds of Hornady 75s, the T1 and T2. The T1 is the normal non cannelure version you find more often, the T2 is the one with a cannelure and can be found in the TAP factory loads as well.

Here is a very detailed thread on the subject.
