Hornady 6.5 creedmore brass

I been playing with a savage hunting rifle in 6.5 creedmoore. it has shot ok. i had 50 new hornady cases and two boxes of hornady factory loaded. shot some factory's to set up my dies. shot some new brass. i decidied to do some checking on the brass. I guess im used to lapua brass..this hornady brass was poor quality. I found as much as 5 whole grains of weight difference in the cases. i mean after checking some of it out and preping it. as well as i could,i kind of think i have had win brass better than this stuff. now this is my opinion and i am used to lapua brass.
CAN CASES BE MADE FROM 22-250 LAPUA BRASS? i kind of heard that somewhere.

the best i could match up cases after preped was about one and a half grains. and that did not leave me many.
but the rifle did shoot better on those cases than it did just shooting them randomly. on the preped cases i was able to shoot 1/2 moa 3 shot groups. with two of three in the same hole. so the rifle is ok. the cartridge has shown me it can shoot and is not real finickey.now wonder how well one would shoot in a custom rifle with high quality match brass. oh man the custom rifle wheels are turning.

ah i posted this in the wrong spot.

Re: Hornady 6.5 creedmoore brass

A 6.5 Creedmor is also a 6.5x250AI.

Brass is easily made by necking Lapua 22-250 brass to 6.5mm and fireforming to an AI chamber(6.5 Creedmor chamber).

Hope that helps.

Re: Hornady 6.5 creedmoore brass

I took some 22-250 brass, win brand, and necked up thru several intervals, and fireformed. the brass will come out too short, but I am not sure if it is enough to matter. it would probably stretch right out in just a couple of firings. I have had good luck with the hornady brass I have bought. I didn't weigh them, but my gun grouped well enough I didn't bother checking too much.

FryeGuy how short was it. what was the overall length? I dont even have a reloading manual that has the 6.5 creedmore in it. i have been useing a hodgen magizine as a guide. it says trim length is 1.910 OAL But i think somewhere else i seen Max OAL is 1.910 so i dont really know.so if max lenght is 1.910 i think 1.890 would be ok i dont think i would want to go much shorter than that.

Thanks for any info.

as far as the Hornady cases i got. the cases were stringing vertically @ 1.5 to 2.0 inch with over 100FPS ES..so i sorted some cases the best i could come up with was a full preped weight of about one and a half grains. not good enough. for a small case...I keep my BR & ppc cases around .3 grains to .5 at worst. big hunting cartridges i keep to around 1.0 grain and i have proven to myself it works into consistant groups with a givin load. so on the matched up brass i was able to cut the groups to- 3 shot 1/2" ,with several groups with two in the same hole. with a more consistant ES around 40 FPS..but im still playing. havent nailed anything down solid.. but it's a 22" barreled savage hunting rifle. and I had a box of factory hornady superperformance 129 SST. the box says 2,950 FPS 24" barrel.. they chroney'ed out of my 22" at 2,980 FPS and about a 20 FPS ES..they were a bit hard on the shoulder.
now the factory 140 A-max load chroney'ed at 2,660 FPS and only shot 3 of them just to check the speed but they were all 3 about the same FPS. But yea some of the cases were 5 i mean 5 whole grains of difference, that is quite a bit for a small case. one day when i get time i may dissect a few of them to find out why. i dont know the why all i know is in the proof.

The (5) I fireformed came out between 1.893 and 1.905 oal. they also had a visible looking bulge just above base. it measures .471, then steps down to .463. I only fired them once I believe. I think the bulge I am seeing/measuring would probably disappear after another firing. I think it all has to do with the sharp taper the 22-250has on body, where the creedmoor is fairly straight on sides. I just haven't bothered with loading them again after see the bulge, and with the good luck I have with hornaday cases. I didn't weigh mine, but I did shoot some sunday. the first (3) shots from a completely cleaned barrel were .654", that was with brand new cases. the next (3) shot group was .293, with 1x fired cases that were partially FL sized. to finish firing the last (2) brand new cases I shot a 2shots that measured .156. also shot another 2shot group of .360 to even out the rows in my ammo box while letting another gun cool. I really like mine a lot needless to say. that load is 140vld hunting bullets, with 41.5grains of h4350, same load as the hornady factory ammo in 140amax. the 130's shoot just as good buy I can never find any, and gave up. I only wish I could afford some redding or forster dies in this caliber. I have rcbs, and I really don't like them.

I would think that the short cases would be perfectly fine once they were sized a couple of times. It would probably stretch that neck longer.

here are a couple pics of the fireformed 22-250 cases, so you can see what I mentioned about the bulge. not sure if the case head would form the same way with brand new brass or not. the brass I used had been fired a couple of times already before I began to play with it.

FryeGuy the cases in the pic's are excessively stretched in the web and i would not shoot them either.
What you need to do when fireforming them is to create a false shoulder by necking up to 7mm then steping the neck back down to 6.5 till you have a heavy crush on the case. just like makeing a Dasher case. then you wont stretch the web of the case. but they may shorten up more then. yea i think 1.890 OAL would not be bad at all.

Thank you for the info..I may buy some 250 cases and try it.. Yea im really likeing the cartridge alot. I have been working on a custom sporter build with a pined recoil lug so i could switch barrel's and im thinking i must have a 6.5 creedmore barrel for it now. my hornady cases are not all bad, but there is alot of varaition in the ones i got. im not too happy with them as i expected them to be better than win brass and so far i dont think they are. but maybe i should buy some more. i may have got a bad lot.

Lapua .243 brass. Run thru savage 250 die, long to create shoulder for fire form and neck up to 6.5. Plenty long neck, trim to 1.905

I agree .243 or .308 seem to be the best to make 6.5 creedmoor brass
