Hornady 55gr sp for 223

A good while back I was loading 55 gr Hornady VMAX bullets for my AR using 26.0 gr of Varget. Worked decent for close up shooting under 200 yards.

In the 9T AR I load the 55g Hornady with C. with 24.5g of Benchmark, cci 400

Rem 700 sps stainless, bolt gun, that load is bumped up quite a bit at 3450 fps with CCi 450

Small groups abound.

While i have several powders i could use H335 is going to be the only powder i want to load with this since i have a large amount of it. I save the other stuff for my more accurate bolt actions

I was just out Pdogging a week ago and used them in both my AR and my Rem 700 bolt gun. Just as accurate as my Vmax loads and the best thing about it was that the prairie dogs didn't know the difference. Good accuracy and fatal results.

8208 powder and the 55 gr. Hornady 2266 does okay.

Hate to be the lone dissenter here but I've shot thousands of the Hornady bullets in a variety of 223s. Always disappointed. For varmints I find they tend to ricochet worse than any other non FMJ bullet. Never got satisfying groups from them, always almost twice the size of other bullets. Good for shooting pop cans in my view. Always hoped for better things as I bought them in the 6K packs.

I agree. There's much nicer varmint bullets, but if I can get these cheap, I'll buy them for shooting steel with the AR carbines. Speer's 55 gr soft point is nice, and the VMAX/AMAX in that weight range are always lasers.

Haven't shot the 55 gr. Use the 50 gr and 335 in a 222 788 Remington and they shoot around 1/2 inch at 100 yards. Like coyote fur harvester the sx are better medicine for coyotes. Both loads use 335 powder.

My gunsmith likes the sx for coyotes also. I did not see any of them in a bulk buy, just the sp. I have been liking the nosler Ballistic tip varmint in 50gr. Minimal damage if in front section shots. Back end is bad. They disappeared for a few year but are back now double the price.
