Hornady .224 75gr A-Max: color me impressed

Recently bought 2 600ct boxes of Hornady .224 75gr A-Max. Got the bug recently to get as much accuracy out of my rifles as I can.

That being said, I've started sorting by a) weight and b) base to ogive measurements

The 2 boxes were opened up and dumped into a pail. Both the same lot number and I wanted to go through all the bullets to see where I stood. EVERY single bullet was within +/- .1 gr of 75gr and each and every bullet was within +/- .001" base to ogive measurements. I'm pretty impressed with that level of consistency. I'm sure Sierra & Bergers and others are consistent, but they are also a lot more money.

I'd also done nearly 1700 Hornady .264 140gr A-Max (MidwayUSA seconds so no lot numbers) and 85% of these were within +/- .1 gr as well as +/- .001 base to ogive. Similar findings with 800 Hornady .308 208 A-Max (production first, all the same lot).

I recently had the exact same experiance with the 75 amax. I sorted 400 (two boxes of one lot and two of another). The two lots were .008 different in lenght but all bullets in its lot were within .001 and all 400 were right on the money weight wise. I was impressed to say the least.

It's the big secret in plain sight - great bullets at a good price. I've been shooting Hornady bullets exclusively for 15 years. I've tried a few other brands, but they aren't as consistent and cost much more. It's nice to have no need to sort, trim, or point(they come from the factory with small meplats) - just load and shoot.

I actually shoot mostly Hornady bullets (.224 50gr Z-Max/V-Max, .224 75gr HPBT (in an AR) and .224 75gr A-Max (in my bolt), .264 140gr A-Max in a 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 208gr A-Max in a 300 WM (soon to be completed). Actually in looking at my shelves, I've got nearly 10k bullets from Hornady. With that being said, the heavier stuff (140gr A-Max & 208 A-Max) did have some stuff that were out of the norm (based on the lots I had) and those have been set aside for foulers and other duties. With 85% being within range of the others, that is a good deal that can be used as match ammo.

For pistol, I have almost zero Hornady bullets except for 44 Mag which I don't even own a pistol / rifle in that caliber.

I just opened a box of 600 this past weekend and sorted one bag of 100 on my Buhay bearing surface comparator. As already stated all were within .001 and I was also impressed. So from now on I will just load and shoot. This box is the AMP bullets which are supposed to be even better as far as QC. Great bullet for target shooting and woodchucks!
