Hornady 17 Hornet

Hornady has a new cartridge out that looks simlar to the 17AH.

Owned a .22 K-Hornet 45 years ago while a University student. Nailed a gazillion chucks with that rig. The announcement of the .17 Hornady started some gears turning.

Used my ballistics program to compare a .17 K-Hornet pushing a 20 gr VMax at 3500 fps to a .22 K-Hornet with a 40 gr VMax at 3000 fps.

Both zeroed at 225 yds, the .17 has 2 inches less drop and 2 inches less wind deflection at 300 yds compared to the .22. Interesting.

Don`t own a Savage M25 but looking over a couple in local gun shops was not impressive. Looks like a rimfire action with a rough finish. The bolts did not move smoothly in the actions. The rear of the barrel is sleeved. Is this to support a press-fit barrel? Is the barrel screwed in and replaceable?

I would imagine the shallower 25 degree shoulder on the .17 Hornady is for smoother magazine feeding. The 40 degree Ackleys can have problems feeding out of a magazine.

Once some decent rifles are factory chambered for this baby, it should take right off. Think about a nice Ruger No.1B, a Cooper Classic or VR, Sako A1 or even a CZ 527. Chambering this in a Savage rimfire action does not do the little round any justice at all. At leat IMHO.

I've use my little Ruger No.3 in .17 Ackley Hornet on both rock chucks and ground squirrels with great results all the way out past 350 yards. I can't imagine this new offering failing, as it's just been a long time since a neat new small caliber centerfire varmint round has been offered, and there's a huge 17AH following as a wildcat.

I'm getting right at 3,810 fps using the 20gr V-Max out of my 22" Pac-Nor 3-groove barrel using only 12.6grs of 1680. We're talking purty efficient, thank you. ;)

My Hornet lineup: 22 K-Hornet, 22 Hornet, 17 Ackley Hornet.

With such a miserly powder appitite, the 17 Hornet should do well in our sour ecomony too.

When it comes out in a decent rifle I will be buying one. And with the price of .17 HMR ammo, I might have a couple of them for sale!
