Hornady 105gr BTHP Match on game?

ab_bentley

I fix stuff, sometimes....
Looking for the experience anyone has using the 105gr BTHP on groundhogs? Good bad or stay away?

I use it in 6BR. Nice for long range, and it tends to open a bit more than the 107 MK, but it still does have a greater tendency to "bounce" and "pencil" at greater distances (over 450). I use it in specific cases where I am pushing the 6BR out over 500 and the hills make for little chance of a errant bouncing bullet. If it hits high the chuck dies...

For closer stuff and a majority of my shooting I use the 70 grain blitzking or the 87 grain Vmax.

If you are stuck on using a 105, I'd strongly suggest an A-Max. Light blood trails to holes bother me.

I am leaning towards the AMAX but it's as rare as PEZ crap. So I am entertaining other options, most of the stuff I shoot is over 500yds and the 105's are king at that distance.

As someone wisely mentioned in another post, there are two basic types of bullets; those with heavier skins or exterior plating, are designed to maintain their ballistic co-efficiency for optimal accuracy and fall in the realm of targets. Those designed for uniform expansion and penetration that typically have thinner exterior covers fall into the hunting realm.

Nine out of ten times the name ascribed by the maker typically explains the bullets intent. Bullets that fall into the "heavy" category for any given bullet size typically perform best at longer rangers; at a certain given distance they maintain velocity better than their lighter brothers and as such, give better long range results.
