Horizontal strings,groups)

I've got a 6br30" pac-nor on a sav. 112. Half the time it gives a perfect verticle but cuts a horizontal line. Maybe a 1/2"+ at 100yds. to 1 1/4"+ at 200yds. I've read alot about verticle strings but not much about horizontal. Which area should a person look into. Everyting is off of bags. My mechanical front rest is comming in the mail. Also the weaver T-36 is in the mail. Your gonna love this part:rolleyes:.. The scope on it now is actually touching the barrel with the objective ring..
The really strange thing is is that it shoots amazingly well. It's just that "if" it's going to string it's most surely gonna be horizontal. I'm really looking forward to the weaver getting here.
Would "torque" be a culprit? It does torque just laying on sand bags. Also I hear about tightening the rest to snug up to the stock. Is it possible to verbally describe how snug?? Tootalloutdoors

The groups I'm talking about at 200yds. Literally look like you cut a line .243" tall from left to right about 1 1/4" perfectly level. 10 shots all in one "slot". That's good word for it, "a slot",, What would you thuink? I know what you think about the scope to barrel contact. tootalloutdoors

Is there a possibility that a round or two keyholed into the target? Do you have the targets and a scanner or digital camera? -Rod-

Read the article by "Humble" Henry Rivers:

http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek034.html

The 30BR requires a technique to shoot, because it has a lot more recoil than a 6PPC for example. Henry noted it took him a year to really figure out how to shoot the thing and then it quickly came together.

"Q: How would you describe your shooting style?

With the 30 BR, you've got to stay with the gun until the recoil comes back. I tell people "You've got to go to sleep with the gun," meaning being real steady through the whole process. I don't put any cheek pressure on the stock. My thumb is straight up and down in the vertical position on stock. I don't grip the gun, but I do put very heavy pressure with my shoulder against the buttstock, pushing the gun against the front of the rest. The Farley rest I use now doesn't move.

There is a trick to this "push" technique. The secret is that you want to make sure the vertical cross-hair stays vertical. I'll push in, then back off a bit, watching the vertical cross-hair. As long as the vertical cross-hair stays vertical I feel good about the gun's position. Then I'll push back in with my shoulder and load up the pressure before I finally break the shot."

The main cause I've seen for horizontal stringing, ruling out wind), is the rear bag not being aligned properly and/or inconsistent pressure on the stock. After each shot look at your rear bag--is the center chanel between the ears still parallel with the barrel? If not you may need to re-balance the gun or grip it a bit. And be careful about how you are contacting the stock with your face or hand.

That was an extremely good article, Thanks.
I've found that at this time, denim sand bags no ears) If I dont get a grip on it it will want to torque completely over on it's side. The rest is also denim sand bags. My first front rest and rear bag is comming in the mail. I've gotten myself to thinking that pulling straight back on the pisol grip into my shoulder, with my thumb "laying" over the top, with very light cheeck contact is the best way so far. I basically just try to keep a firm snug feel in my inside shoulder. My breathing could be better. I'm way into experimenting, and I haven't given my thumb much thought at all, except to not push down. Bag placement and "table manners" seems extremely probable to me.. Thanks tootalloutdoors

No on the wind flags. The only time I shot outside it was snowing and blowing. It did alot better than I expected then. Couldn't even get to my bench then, too much snow. I just marched off 200 yds. and shot off the hood of my truck. All my shooting will be and has been underground until the snow is gone in April. The gun does alot better than me. I don't have anyone with me to help me with this or that. tootalloutdoors

total:
Look at load or pressure also for horizontal. ya know how to get the vertical out right? if it is not due to wind then you must look to load problems, shooter performance, trigger control, bag problems.
