Hoover trimmer or MCR Bullet meplat uniformer

I've been looking into trimming/uniforming my 7mm 180 hybrids. If I go with the Hoover trimmer do I need the tipping die too or is just trimming good enough. Has anyone used the MCR setup. Is it any good. Has anyone used both prefer one over the other?

I've found tipping has a greater effect, whether positive or negative than just trimming alone.

MCR works better than hoovers!

You got to be kidding me, i sure done a bunch over the years and unless the one that i have is different the MCR. is a manual one. It does no better job than the Hoover that is under power. jim

I have tried most of the trimmers out there including the MCR. I like the Hoover best. It is quick and easy to use and it doesn't mark the bullets at the ogive like some of them. I like to trim then point then trim again mainly because the trimmer end-mills can leave a burr around the meplat that the pointer breaks off and the second trimming knocks off. All of the Hoover tools are expensive compared to others but every one I've used has done the job properly.

I use the MCR trimmer and it trims and recreates the hollow point just fine. I have never used the Hoover so can't comment on it.

Pointing after trimming is what I do. May not be needed for all bullets. Testing on target will let you know what what helps and what doesn't.

Yes, the target will tell you. But don't expect it to shout the real answer. You'll be lucky to get even a low whisper.

I've just completed a very careful 200 round, (5 shot groups) test of various meplat treatments. It appears that trimming and chamfering using the MCR Trimmer, followed by pointing produces the best performance. It also produces what looks to my eyeball (formal education in the field of aerodynamics) as the bullet with the nicest looking tip.

However, teasing the rather small increase in performance from a pile of data which is loaded with "noise" caused by the normal factors affecting precision at the paper target wasn't easy. If you can put 200 rounds into one small hole, then testing meplat treatments will be a snap. Otherwise, you must use the very best reloading techniques and the very best shooting techniques that you're capable of. Plus you must employ the best measurement tools and wise analysis if you expect to find the truth. It's there, but you aren't going to find it if your average 5 shot group size is 1/2 MOA and you expect to test various meplat treatments by shooting only 10 rounds. Hint: A good scanning/measuring/scoring computer program like On Target is nearly obligatory.

Mozella -

At what distance did you conduct the 200 rounds of testing?

Myself, I do my meplate trimming & pointing testing at 1000yds and have found obvious winners every time from a couple groups of each modification, to what is better and/or worse in comparison. But the sticker that I have seen is what works with one bullet brand/type does not always work for another brand/type, and any and all modifications need to be tested for every bullet brand & type. Even revisited from Lot to Lot, or so has been my experience.

Have tried both hoover and MCR. The MCR gives the most consistent / accurate trim, Hoover was faster for the lazy, in my opinion
