Hoover pointing die isue

Just started pointing bullets
180 Berger Hybrids, using the Hoover pointing die.
I trimmed all the bullets on a Giraud metplat trimmer. Started to point the bullets, all was working good for the first bit. They were all with in 1 thou for length, majority were the same.
Then the bullets started sticking in the punch!! I took apart the die, cleaned lubed you name it.
Was getting worse as I went along, I did 500 and gave up.

I tried adjusting the die after so it barely made contact, bullets still were sticking.
Not sure if anyone has had this issue.
Can tell you I am about done with tipping.
Just wished I didn't have 1500 bergers trimmed.
Thanks

I'd give John a call. He's a great guy, very knowledgeable and helpful. I'm confident he'll get you fixed up.

try cleaning the caliber sleeve with a tight fitting bore brush. I have this happen from time to time and that has always fixed the sticking for me.

When you are using his pointing dies. You use a caliber specific sleeve that holds the bullet straight. If you apply too much pointing pressure it will cause the jacket walls to expand in the sleeve and bind up. You are probably over pressuring the pointing process..... Been there,,,, done that.....

Will also advise to test pointing against the non-pointed, before you go all in (repeatedly see it go either way).
And the amount you point them (a small amount of pointing, typically proves out better for me).
And for each brand/type of bullets (even from Lot to Lot).

Also test trimmed against not trimmed (again, have seen it go either way).

Edit:
Below is two 1000yd test results of pointing verses not. In this scenario, the non-pointed bullets (lower) grouped around 1" less then the pointed bullet groups. Note: the pointed bullets gained BC, printing 1 to 2-MOA higher (which may be beneficial to a score shooter verses a group shooter).

No vent hole.
The bullet sticks in the very tip.
I figured there must be something that got stuck in there.
I will clean it again tonight and try it again.
Not real aggressive on the amount of tipping. Point are all still open
And I backed it off till it barely touched the bullet, still stuck.

Thanks

I have had the same issue with 180s also, and have never been able to resolve it. I recently switched to 184s, bought the proper stem and have not had an issue since. I would like to hear what hoover says about it. I have also never had a problem with the bullets that have been stuck they shoot great, just an inconvenience. Hoover products are top shelf IMHO and great people to deal with.
