Honeing the Neck of a FL Sizer

I have a FL Sizer die and while using Lapua Brass, it oversizes the neck before it comes back over the expander Ball. Then, the necks come out crooked. I need to get the neck honed out about .002. There must be someone out there that can hone the neck correctly. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance

I buy my sizers from Forster and they hone the necks to my speck for $15.00.

For me, part of the enjoyment I get from this hobby,is trying different things. Honing a die neck is one of them. The first one I had a little doubt but, we learn by doing. I ordered a barrel lap from MSC. I already had some lapping compounds so it cost less then 15.00 to try. It turned out great! Less then .0005 TIR in a sized case. EZ-PEZEE.
Just take it easy on the shoulder neck area and check your progress often. I now have many dies that are "custom".
Less working the brass is always a good thing. I have yet to screw on up. Try it, you'll like it!

I'm kinda new at this type of stuff but if I understand what you are saying...I had the same thing happening with my Lapua 6.5-284 to 6mm-284. Most of my necks were .015-.016. I turned them to .012 for my particular rifle and...No more crooked necks!

My first try, i got into the shoulder a tiny bit. Doesn't seem to hurt. Bolt closes normal.

Just hope neck wall thickness on the next new brass lot is same or thicker.

Neck turning and using a standard FL die can also work, instead of opening up a die. But more work.

I have ordered many dies from Forster also but they didn't make a die for this particular wildcat so I had one made by someone else. It was close but still sized the necks a little too much. I could turn the necks-correct-but I didn't want to turn several hundred cases. I could go to another make of brass with thinner neck walls but since I have several hundred pieces if Lapua brass, I thought getting this die corrected was the way to go. Thanks for all the great suggestions......

What size Lap would you use for a 6MM ? Blind hole or through hole ? Please explain to those of us that

FL dies are hardened. I suppose with the right tooling it will cut through. But unless the cut area is re-hardened it would tend to gall on the brass necks requiring constant attention.

Wouldn't the lubricant that you use to size with prevent the galling that you mentioned? Like Hornady Oneshot Spray Lubricant for example????

Sorry life calls me away. The laps I use are the through hole. They come sized by 32nds. They are adjusted by tightening the screw at the bottom. the lap and the mandrel are on a taper and cover the range of sizes. So for a 6mm case I got the1/4 inch dia. I think I started with 400 grit and work my way up to a 1000. Just work slowly and measure often. If your going to do this kind of work get a set of pin gages. It's the easiest way to check your progress, and you'll find them useful for many more things. Paul
