I think I know the answer to the question, but I have to ask it: Why do you want to hone your FL sizing die?

The next question is how much do you need to hone the die?

this die is being used a forming die that i am using to go from 308win to 6.5creedmoor. it works like a champ right now but it sizing the neck down way too much.

need to hone out to .295.

that way it goes stright to the neck shaver and then final trim

i hope in the near future redding makes a SB bushing die for 6.5creed then i will be happy

My wife sometimes gets patients that come in and say something like: "Doctor, I would like a prescription for....." She tactfully responds by saying " Why don't you tell me what problem you're having and if that medicine is appropriate I will give a prescription for it." Well..., what the patient wants and what he needs rarely are the same thing.

Why don't you tell us the problem you're having and what you're trying to do and maybe someone here can help you resolve it.

Kindest regards,

Joe

I've had to do the same thing when converting my 308 lapua brass to 260AI.

What if, instead of honing the die neck (an irreversible and often problematic process because dies are hardened, not to mention that you have to be twice as accurate with a die then with a mandrel, an impossible task for most small machine shops), you were to use a mandrel to expand the necks to provide the desired neck dimension. That is what I do before turning necks.

i am not having any problems just want to cut another step out of my reforming process, thats all.

right now its

308win trim to 1.925

anneal

the SB size the case

then expand the neck

turn the neck

final trim

i just want to cut out the expanding of the neck

JoeR: i think thats what i am going to have to do this is as stream lined as i can get the process. just trying to be efficent as possible

Honing the neck will create another problem, not all your necks will have the same neck thickness, so if you just use just the sizing die with out the expander die what will happen is that some of the neck will bind around the neck turning mandrel because they are too tight. Or conversely some of the cases will be too loose. I understand your desire to cut out steps, I try to do the same thing, IMO you are already doing it properly, eliminating the expansion step will create problems for you. I tried it and it didn't work out.

Good luck.

I routinely hone my FL sizing die necks to the diameter I need them to be. I learned how partially from the school of hard knocks (lots of mis-steps) and an internet article that introduced me to bottom and thru hole laps.

If there is interest, I could outline my process with pics to show detail. I can tell you from experience that a split dowel and honing brushes don't get the job done on a sizing die.

This was the write-up that introduced me to the proper tools. I buy mine from MSC Industrial Supply. https://rickaverill.com/projects-past-and-present/lapping-reloading-dies/

Forster provides this service on their dies for $12 + return shipping. http://www.forsterproducts.com/resources/custom-machining-service/

Before you start, make sure you know the ID you want. I use pin gages and sizing actual cases to measure my progress.

Forster only works on forster dies, when they make a SB 6.5Creedmoor i will be one happy reloader

High power bullseye busters have been honing out FL dies since the 1960's. Even with no case prep, the cases sized with them gelded (no balls) shoot bullets as straight as other top quality dies can enable.

Case necks with a .001" spread in thickness will position bullets up to .0005" off center to the bore when fired. Not a big problem.
