Homebuilt Coaxial rest

Here are some pics of the simple coaxial rest that i and my friend Marjan designed and built.
The basic idea behind the rest was that we would build three rests out of our own pocket fro the club to use as loaner rests for shooters that do not have quality rests of their own. So rest had to be simple and reasonably cheap. It was never meant to rival top of the range rests, but we ended up with something that is not that far of either and built at a fraction of the cost

Most parts are bar stock so just cut to length, most holes are mirrored so one template works for 2 plates, spherical bearings have flanges so do not need a machined hole to press fit them in so you could make most parts on a basic drill press. sliding plate use linear bearings so coaxial unit is a cassette that can be taken out as a unit.
Rest is pure counterweight design so friction plates are there to provide feel and take out any slop more than in function of keeping rest from creeping. to balance the rest i use 1 weight on the Short pole for sporter , a second weight on a longer pole for LV and second weight slid all the way forward for HV ,Rest can handle heavier f class rifles but would need heavier counter weight to balance the rifle.
First version actually had a wooden baseplate but we are now building a steel one to ad some heft. I took the rest with me to Rimfire and Airrifle European Championship and World Cup in Plzen in addition to my personal high $$$ rest to use as a spare in case of need but as it turned out rest became the primary and a 1000$ rest was used as a spare as my team mates really loved it as did any one who tried so after the competition it found new owners as i sold it to Philippines BR team member so i am now building a second and a third one with some mods and by the rest 5 we will most likely lower the side post as the rest has way too much elevation travel for BR

Very ncely done. Did you purchase the coax unit or make it? Very interested as a nice rest is on my list of things to do.

Thanks, Paul

Every single part we designed and built ourselves ,there would really be no point in buying a coaxial unit as it would break the budget asap. Our budget on material and parts for the rest is well under 200$ and that includes rest top and a 2 seb bags. Actually cost was part of the reason to go coaxial as good quality cam or thread driven unit would be more expensive in both parts an labour .

These rests are now probably going to be built in a small production run in addition to 3 for the club as we have too many people looking at us with puppy eyes ::) not to. And here we are probably talking 400-500$ for complete rests

Beta ver 2.0 prototype ,a lower tower a 3 piece base . A new rest top is in works now.

These first 3 rests were hand built and machined , for next 12 i have updated the design in many areas and they are all going to be CNC machined so should be even better. Rest base and some other details enable the rest to be transported in a compact case measuring 13''x11''x4''. Counter weight system makes for really smooth moving coaxial unit(lots of weights on the picts as were just testing the rest with the F class open rifle)

Parts for first dozen or so of a new and improved version are slowly coming off the CNC .Design changes now enable rest to be configured for left or right hand elevation control in mater of minutes 3 part base is also fully modular so you can assemble it in various configurations.

Trying out a new rest top layout ,prototype turned out to be cca 5mm to short so it compresses the bag to much but its otherwise near final design

Re: Coaxial rest

First batch is being assembled and here is the pic of the first rests made in small series ,rest design evolved considerably and now everything is CNC machined so not home built rest anymore. Primarily meant for BR so uses a counterweight for the smoothest possible action.

Rests cost cca 400Eur which at the moment equals cca 550$US.
As i am in Europe shipping ti US gets expensive ,probably over 100$ .

You can follow more interesting new products being developed on my facebook page. Future is bringing new carbon fiber benchrest stocks and an F class stock.

Late to the game here....but if these are available or the CNC plans are available please let me know. I have a machinist who could knock this up for me - I'd be happy to pay licensing or whatever to save on the shipping from Europe. Thanks,

Casey
