homebuilt bore guide

Hello all,I realize that making your own bore guide is not really cost effective, but since I have a suitable piece of Delrin and more machine tools than sense,I figured it would be a good rainy day project.Anyone made their own and would care to suggest some good features? I mainly am curious about how it fits into the chamber.I made one for my old military rifles,Springfield 03 and A3's)using a piece of brass tubing joined to an old case, fits the entire chamber, but I don't know if thats the best way to go on a newly chambered target rifle. Thanks for any help,Regards,Jim

I made one for an Anschutz and also modified a couple of commercial ones. One thing I normally do is add an o-ring groove that coincides with the middle of the rear rec ring. This aids in the centering and also helps keep the guide from backing out. I normally make the forward section of the bore large enough to allow a brush to slip through with no resistance. I make the removable rear section a precision sliding fit on the cleaning rod.

My last project was making a Lucas 6mmBR bore guide fit a 6mmPPC chamber. I turned down the front half of the chamber end until it was a nice fit in the ppc chamber. Then I turned new o-ring grooves on the new 6ppc section and on the original 6br dia back half. I haven't tried it to see it it will still work with the 6br but it works fine with the ppc.

Don't think that all commercial bore guides do the job!!

Learned the hard way that some bore guides, particularly for the .223 Rem) bearly go into the chamber on the 700 Rem action. Resulted in the famous 6 O'Clock wear on the chamber lead and rifling.

Solved the problem by putting the commercial deldrin units into the lathe and trimming until the face of the chamber shaped guide touched the face of the shoulder. Use the 223 for 22-250 and 243/6mm.

Lucas guides are made for the exact chamber size, extra long and have the rod guide for added protection from bowing of the cleaning rod.

Also the aluminum commercial bore guides have this same problem and their bore diameters are generally too large. Particularly if you are using a 308 family case for the 22-250, 243, 6mm etc. They tend to have oversize inside diameter for the 22 and 6mm cases.

I now make my own from deldrin or modify the commercial guides. ENCO has 36" pieces of 3/4" dia deldrin/actetal cheap.

A good lead is hard to find and easy to ruin.

You can also make chamber plugs from the scrap for use with aerosol Wipe-Out.
