Hollow pointing bullets

Just wanting thoughts and maybe information about hollow pointing a 90 Berger match bullet. A friend of mine done this and tested the hollow point vs the original. The hollow pointed bullet was explosive compared the original. It was a really big difference. One question I have does the BC change very much just by opening up the hollow point a little? These bullets shoot outstanding in my gun and I am trying for some long range kills on a ground hog.

maybe he could use a "nose ring tool" otherwise , drilling seemed inconclusive. Unless you just want to make sure the hole is open and not plugged. Seems like either bullet would work on a ground hogs

Well the test results I witnessed was a milk jug filled with wet newspapers. The 90 gr bullet from the factory made a bullet hole at entry and a punched a hole the size of a tennis ball and left a flap of milk jug. The modified bullet blew the milk jug int pieces and paper plastic exploded everywhere. The sound of modified bullet hitting the milk jug was very impressive. The end results were way better than I anticipated.

It’s interesting to see how people have different results across the country. I shot a whole pile of stuff with Berger 88s a couple of winters ago and they’re a liability. I sold off the remaining 1500 or so I had and won’t go back.

The 90s work fine around here but if you really want reliability I’d use the 87 VLDH.

The 87 v max bullets have done great out to 325 yds. They just are not very consistent and they definitely do not shoot the little small hole groups that the 90 Bergers do. The 88 Bergers I just haven't found a good load with them and and didn't want to buy another box and also just do not want to keep burning components when I have one shooting very small groups.

Why would you not touch the 90 grain match Bullet
Because you said they shoot really good in your rifle so why mess with them ? I don't think the ground hog would be anymore dead by blowing it to smithereens. I would not trust myself to make a hole in a match bullet and expect it to be as accurate as the factory bullet. Especially if you plan on shooting them at "long range" . Lots of people have different results. Like I said, I would use the one that shoots the best. Put a hole in them and see what shoots the best.

When I was a kid and my Late and Great Dad had was his O6 Springfield with peep sites , he would do a little work on the bullet tips and they were divesting on ground hogs. The only ammo he had to shoot in his rifle back in the hills of West Virginia was military ball, He was a very good shot with that Springfield, a 200 yard ground hog did not have a chance sitting on a rock pile. My Dad was my hero !! He also had a very small bottle of mercury, but he said that it was for special occasions, I never seen him shoot that. I just thought it was cool to watch it roll around on a piece of paper, Where has the good days gone.

Something like this would be very good for opening target bullets for hunting. I've seen one with a slightly bigger centre drill bit which drills the centre deep and parallel and then the taper can be adjusted to set the chamfer.

The 88 grain flat base Berger varmint bullet performs the very best..Shoot some, you will see performance. the old plastic half gallon water filled milk jug, that size. Serious fun those are, on a distant hillside. Of course, where you can safely blaze away, the .243 Winchester cartridge big fav of mine for hunting. mike in ct

The 85 grain Sierra is an excellent bullet, very accurate and explosive.
No argument from me. Better price too, I like that. It is silly how many really good 6MM projectiles there are for Varmints. I always test 3 brands of desired weights. I got a 308 Winchester buddy set up just for Groundhogs. It has its place. 110 or 125 Grain bullets, they sizzle to a real thump. In the correct rifle twist barrel. Mike in CT Damit.

When you modify something like a bullet you are taking away from its intended purpose and expect different results.
The results you mention with the milk jug is always impressive at close range but you are messing with the stability of the bullet when YOU do anything to the bullet so long range accuracy will be affected.
But if you can hit your intended target, get after it.
When I was a kid I experimented with crazy crap, but now I realize that someone else has already done this, that's why this forum was created.
The 88 Berger's are very accurate if you take time to work up a load.
I shoot prairie dogs out to 750 yards with them.
