Holding off Vs Dialing in.

memilanuk said:
Well... went to a LR practice on Friday; had to hold way off and dial both. Mainly because I ran out of windage - at 21 MOA left. Ended up holding between left edge of black and right edge of the next target over. Yowza :o Not shooting a 'light' load either - B185s @ 2820fps.

Monte,
That must have been at Rattlesnake? When the cross wind is over 20mph, I hold on the upwind target!

Yep... except we were sharing one target, so I was having to hold off in the weeds on the backstop. Sometimes making sure I was holding on the same bit of vegetation was kinda tricky ;)

I'd say road kill would be a great next topic. Found any "Get Well Soon" balloons jade? I saw a nice fat skunk on the way home from Pampa today and thought about you......

Russell,
If you go with fox, you might want to go the faux fox route. Don't want to get the PETA fans hackles up.....

Hah!

I stopped by their tent at the Berger's. They weren't happy about Warren's kangaroo.

I guess I missed the PETA tent Russell. Were they giving out free People Eating Tasty Animals tee shirts? I can't believe I didn't see it.

it was right next to the Nightforce tent. They commandeered a NF Competition and had mounted it to a paint gun and were about to take out Warren's 'roo skin. Jade and I threw the purple swamp donkey skin over her head and took her to the ground.

I don't mind saying, she fought like a man.

Before deciding what strategy to apply at the start of a match it is best to decide if the conditions you see are going to hold? In particular is the wind likely to switch directions. If you think it may change direction then IMO you are best served by not touching your windage knob. Hold off and chase the spotter/changes back and forth across the target. I personally have little problem with holding off the target frame if need be. Of course shooting F-Open is an advantage in this regard.

Larry,

If you're getting as forgetful as me, then maybe you should do as I do which is to mark on a plotting sheet where I aim each shot. Like you I prefer to leave the windage knob on zero and will aim off the target occasionally if required. I have a plain cross-hair so use the target rings and outer edges for reference. Having been doing it that way for several years, I've developed a better sense of the effect of wind than thinking purely in terms of MOA. Having a good wind zero gets maximum value out of this method.

Congratulations on your recent win in the Berger SW Nationals.

Why do I get the feeling that Warren egged on this whole horrible sceen. I can just see him standing there laughing while you two gorillas beat up some little girl with hairy armpits.....

First off, she wasn't that little.

Secondly, in hind sight, I should have let her grease Warren's 'roo.

Alan,
Nice to hear from you.
I waste a lot of plot sheets since the only thing I write on them is the date (sometimes) and my starting zero and my ending zero. Sheet is used mainly to remind me what the various rings are worth if my zero is way off due to stupidity on my part :)

She's lucky she opted not to tangle with Malcolm...he's a tough little bugger. :P

The knobs on scopes are there for a reason.....

In my version of the F-Open world, the windage knob is there to keep the weight of the gun off the bolt handle when she is riding on the back seat of the truck.
