hodgon 4350 (243)

I used to use H4350 with 105s with great results. In the end went with a slower powder for better velocity but with 75s I would think it would be an ideal combination.

My recipe was 42.2gr IMR4350/Sierra 75gr HP/WLR primer/mixed brass. This was shot out of a Ruger M77 with lightweight sporter barrel and gave around .9MOA (which wasn't bad for that rifle). Groups opened up greatly after 5+ rounds though with that skinny barrel though!

Last year I started loading for a brand new 15" 243 Encore barrel. I tried several different powders with the 75gr V max and while the accuracy wasn't bad I almost went blind in my left eye from the muzzle flash and they all left the crown pretty smudgy. Looking for something better I found a comment by Walt Berger that if a 243 won't shoot using IMR3031 it won't shoot. I looked at 3031 on the burn rate chart and its pretty fast but almost every loading manual I own had loads listed for it. What the heck I had plenty on hand so I didn't have to go out and buy any. I loaded 10 test rounds and hit the range. Wow! Muzzle flash was gone, end of the stainless barrel stayed spotless, barrel stayed cool, and bugholes at 100. I ran strings of 300 rounds without cleaning and the bore was spotless. I switched to 87 gr V max"s and the same thing only better accuracy at long distance. I don't know what it would be like in a rifle but for a 15" barrel I'm sold on it. With a 1 in 10 twist anything the 75 can do the 87 does better.

Is the H4350 a fast burner a clean ??

Cheers

I would not, and neither does hodgdon, recommend H4350 for the 75 grain in 243 Win. It does the best for heavy bullets in 243.
H4350 is not a fast burning powder. Hodgdon got highest velocities with Super Performance and H414. If you happen to have Varget it would work OK too.

IMR 4350 or H 4350 good to go running near maximum for a clean burn. H takes a little more powder to get same pressure.

I use 4350 with 75 gr Hornadys and get 3350 out of a HB Sako, 24". I won't list the powder charge here as the powder is from the 70's when I bought it in bulk. When I developed the load, I shot a 200 yard .400 and .600 so accuracy is not an issue.

I also use 8208, 36 gr. with a 70 gr. Sierra. Shoots .250 and less at 100 yards.

Yea mate but only the min a max . I ain't got a chronograph

Scratching my head; what does not having a chronograph have to do with it?
Hodgdon data also gives you an approximation of velocity and that can be compared to what numbers other posters have given for H4350. You won't know how fast ANY of the loads with any powder fly unless you have a chrono.

All I've been able to see is just the min and max . Without having a chronograph I won't know what velocity I'd be getting in between .

And you know that with the H4350?
How?

I'm referring to the varget mate .

Oh, I got it now. You can't use Varget because you don't have a chrono but you can use H4350 without a chrono.
Makes perfect sense to me.

Doesn't make any sense to me either.... ;)

I've got a Chrono, I've got a .243W I shoot in competition, I've used 75gr, 80gr & 90gr bullets with Varget for the light weight and H4350 for the heavier 90gr which is the limit for my twist rate. I can win competitions but I don't use the Chrono very often unless I just want to make a slight adjustment like seating depth and see after accuracy what difference that change made...

Varget doesn't have the accuracy with heavier and H4350 doesn't work well at all with lighter weight.

I must be weird.... :)
