Hodgdons's Hybrid 100V in 6.5-284

What's your opinion of using H100V in a 6.5-284? It looks ideal in the loading manual for the heavy bullets. I haven't been able to find any, locally, so I thought I'd ask you guys for advice.
Dave

I used it in my 7MM Mag and had very good results--I was shooting a 140 NBT--Powder flows like stick powder--I would use it again in the 7 Mag

I've used it in my 6mm Remington and I like it. It meters well but it isn't one of Hodgdon's "Extreme" powders.

Shooting it in 6.5/06 Ackley Improved. Have had good accuracy, velocity and standard deviations from 120- 140 grain bullets. Hope this helps.

I use Reloader 17 in 6.5/284 with good success and it is similar to your Hybrid. Both have 4350 burn rates. I am using 47 gr. w/ 142 gr. SMK for around 3000 fps out of a 30" barrel.

Thanks for the info Gents! I have just started accuracy testing this rifle. I bought it from a fellow Forum member. I have been cautiously increasing the powder chg. and am @ 48.0 gr. of h4831sc which gave me a vel. of 2850 w/142SMK's. The 5shot group size was a scant 0.184"!!! Wished I could stop here, but I'm looking for 2950-3000 fps. Barrel is a tight-neck 1-8 twist Bartlein 28" long.

I have gotten best velocities and very good accuracy with Mag Pro when shooting 140 Amaxs. Not sure a ball powder will win any BR matches but it works great for hunting loads. I can get 3020 fps with a 25" barrel and about 1/3 MOA in a sporter.

I strictly shoot 130 Diamond Lines now and use 50.5 grain R17 for 3200 fps. Quit messing with the 140s.

Good info guys thanks! dennisinaz has it right on bullets the 130g Norma Diamond Line is great, I have been using it excusivly in my GA Precision 260 rem. I'm getting 2900fps from a 24" barrel with hybrid 100v

I'm working with a 6.5-284 Norma Savage rifle, one issue thats been bothing me about load development for the 6.5-284 cartridge is most of the published load don't come close to filling the case. My cases hold 59-60g of most powders I have tried, yet most loads seem to be around 50g. My first batch of test loads used IMR 7828 SSC, I had to use 58g to get over 3000fps with the 130g Diamond Lines and that load was hard to extract so probably over presure. I will be tring the 50.5g R17.

Would sure love to know why most loads don't fill this case? Anybody know?

At present I'm using 51.0 gr of 4831sc in Lapua cases and that fills the case to about 3/32" from the neck/shoulder junction. With the boat-tail partially protruding in to this void. I figure I'm getting close to 100% load density.

The ball powders are notably denser than the rat-turd powders. 50 grains of 4831 has a lot more volume than does Mag Pro or Magnum (two that I use). R17 is just a different animal.

Monolithicman- be careful and work up to that load. My COL is about 3.1" which is longer than some reamers allow.

thanks for the reply Dennisinaz

I agree the ball powder is denser, but I'm measuring out the suggested weight of H4831 SC or Hybrid 100V or what ever other extruded (from a rat?) powder and dropping it in my case, looking in and seeing a ton of space. If I fill it up to the start of the neck I can fit 58-60 g of those powders. Like you I am seating out close to 3.10 over all so little case space is used by the bullet. Now with Ramshot Magnum the manual lists up to 63 g. That's a load I could see filling the case pretty well, I just don't understand why so many loads from reputable articles and sources leave 8 to 10g of powder capacity on the table.

Is there a lack of powders that are really the right burn rate for the 6.5-284 case? From my understanding if you reach max pressure before you fill the case the powder is too fast, and conversly if you fill the case but are still under pressure your powder is too slow, I ran into this situation with 260 Rem using h4831 SC, pack the case over full and still low pressure and low velocity, so I moved to Hybrid 100V and found that to have about the right burn rate for 130-140g in 260 rem.

Tomorrow I am going to try H1000 and Superformance in the 6.5-284 as well as the R17. Should be fun. I will report back.

Good luck, and good shooting.

I, for one, don't get overly concerned about 100% load density. I load for consistent accuracy and maximum safe (pressure-wise) velocity. Usually, these loads end up in the 90-100% load density range.

So far not so good, 50.5 of reloader 17 got me 2930 fps average H1000 56g gave 2736 fps 57g 2800 with pressure signs, Superformance 55g 3050 fps but bolt was hard to open so probably too hot.

I have to say I am not impressed by the 6.5-284, I can match or beat most of these velocities with my 24" 260 Rem. and this is a savage 111 with a 26" barrel. Using Lapua brass.

dennisinaz, how long is your barrel 35" ?

Going to try to get some ramshot magnum, but not getting my hopes up, maybe I should try Hybrid 100V, H4831SC? Any other suggestions?

I don't know what the deal is with your 6.5-.284, but I have no trouble reaching 3000 fps with 140 gr bullets and 3100 with 130s. That is with a 25" 3-groove Benchmark barrel and I have yet to see any signs of high pressure in any load to date. Powders that have hit these velocities include H4350, H4831SC and Hybrid 100V.
I don't believe the .260 Rem can match this, simple physics, powder capacity and TINSTAAFL.

WYcoyote, I am not saying my 260 Rem can match the velocity you are claiming from your 6.5-284, just the ones I am currently getting from mine. The whole reason I am asking is because I think I should be able to get more velocity with more powder, no need to bust out the TINSTAAFL :) I will try the powders you suggest even though they are faster than the powders I have already tried, who knows the burn rate charts are only a general idea anyway.

Thanks for the input.

I'm shooting a tight neck.
I have an update on my load testing: I'm presently at 52.5gr of 4831SC with a ~velo of 3030fps with a real low ES. methinks I'll stop there!
I've never had a rifle that shoots like this, i.e., I started at 47.5 gr and went up in 1/2gr increments to 52.5gr and all 5 shot groups went into 5/16" or less and they all went into the same spot on the targets (no scope change) which were set @ 100yds. I do believe I have what some would call a hummer!

race snake

Intresting to see your final outcome. Turns out ive been shooting this load in five diffrent barrels over the last ten years of compeating. sure some times its 51.5 up to 53grs in a particular barrel but its the hands down winner every time for.... consistant accurate strings of fire that last 15 to 20 min. I have only shot the 140 class bullets as well.

I keep trying new stuff when Iget a new barrel but have not found anything to out perform it in the long run.
Monolythic:
I have a pound of Superperformance and was going to try that next. What kind of accuracy are you getting inthe 2950 to 3000fps velocity.

best of luck
RussT

Rtheurer,

The accuracy seems good in the 2950-3000 fps range but shooting ladders, and a small number of rounds its hard to really tell yet.

I tried 55g of Superformance and that seemed a little hot, velocity was 3060 fps.

I still can't wrap my head around why all the 6.5-284 loads people like don't fill the case by 6-8g. Sure if they shoot use them, but it still seem like everybody is leaving velocity on the table, my best loads in 260 rem fill the case completely. It is possible that there is just no powder available that hits the perfect burn rate for the 6.5-284, I don't know. Just contrary to my understanding of the fundamentals of how rifles work.

Good luck, and good shooting!
