Hodgden vs IMR 4350

There isn't a huge difference but data is not interchangeable. The big difference between the 2 is that the Hodgdon is a extreme powder meaning it is more temperature stable. There is still some variation due to temperature but not as much as non extreme powders. With that said, some rifles will like the IMR better. For hunting loads I'll only use the Hodgdon Extremes.

Of the 3 "4350" powders (Hodgden, IMR & Accurate) the 'H' delivers the lowest velocity for a given OBT according to QuickLoad but is universally acclaimed for it's temp stability - QL even tells you not to use temp. compensation for it. I still get pretty good results with A4350 plus higher velocity but I'm just one 'sample'.

Is there and noticeable difference is the powder from these two manufactures of 4350 ?

IMR-4350 is made in Canada and is owned by General Dynamics Weapons Division.

H-4350 is made in Australia by ADI and is now owned by a French investment group.

Originally DuPont set both powder manufacturing plants up in Canada and Australia but they went there separate ways. The powders are close in burning rates but are not the same powder and are manufactured differently.

"We also now have a situation wherein powders having the “same” numerical designation are available from several different sources. Probably the best example of this is the slow-burning single-based rifle propellant known as 4350. Available now as the original IMR 4350, Hodgdon’s H4350 and Accurate Arms’ 4350, the potential for confusion is obvious.
Other powders sharing this same situation are 4227, 4198, 4895, and 4831. Each of these powders is available from both the Hodgdon and IMR powder companies. Most of these are interchangeable with the similarly designated powder, i.e. H4895 with IMR 4895, but this is not always the case. The two 4831s, for example, are quite different and cannot be safely interchanged. For this reason, we recommend that loads be used exactly as they are shown in the manuals with no substitutions.

Here's an example from QL of the 3 4350's using the same Optimum Barrel Time, cartridge, bullet, etc. and what powder charge it would take from each to achieve it.

Even though H4350 & IMR4350 appear 'close' in this example, you couldn't /shouldn't interchange them since each manufacturer has different tolerances for burn rates.

H4350 just a tad slower in burn rate.
In the 30-06 I still favor IMR 4350 and works very well in
300 WBy and 338 Win Mag.

H4350 and IMR 4831 are very close in performance.

I think you'll find ADI is owned by Thales (www.thalesgroup.com) that works in the Defense, Security, Aerospace, and Transportation areas with about 67,000 employees worldwide including Thales Comms Inc in the US (http://www.thalescomminc.com/). Hopefully ADI will keep making great propellant.

Thales Group is a French multinational company that bought ADI.

My point being the world that many of us grew up in with Remington/DuPont and Winchester/Olin is long gone and swallowed up by the Industrial Military Complex.

ADI Powders History - Believe it or not

Back during the last big primer and powder shortage , My load for the 3, 260rems I was shooting ,was 42.5grs of H-4350, with 139 Lapua's , Fed 210m , could not find it anywhere , found alot of IMR-4350 , tried 42.5 , with everything the same as the H-4350 load , it matched hole for hole with the H-4350 load , used it in our local 200yrd thru 1000yd steel matches , all settings were the same , used it for 2yrs , till I was able to get some more H-4350 , then switched back , would do it again if I had to. Worked for me ?

Same here, bigedp51, the only difference being (as a Brit) that we had the likes of Nobel then ICI that used to make great powders (Stuff like Revolver 1 was my 357 "power" powder in the 1980 plus Shotgun 80 for 148 grain HBWCs plus Rifle 0 and Rifle 1 in the 243 Win) and I think H-322 was "Made in Scotland" marked for a long time...sad that they're gone with the rest but it guess that's progress?
BTW I think Thales took an "interest" in ADI around six years ago...which I hope is a good sign.
