Hill Country, Texas. Where’re the squirrels?

Savage Anschutz? What is that? Is that a partnership between the two companies? I’m not an expert just trying to learn. Thank you.

When Anshutz first started importing to the US they did it through a partnership with Savage. There were half a dozen models offered and they were pure Anshutz just labeled with the Savage name. They are typically great shooting rifles.

Most Texas Hill Country "squirrels" can be found within the Austin city limits.

North of Austin. Squirrels? We had bunches of them. Then we got Coyotes, not to many squirrels now.

We back up to several hundred acres of hardwoods. Had 6 or 8 regulars around the house annoying the better half. Started seeing a couple of owls at dusk. Didn't see any more squirrels for three or four months.

They try to avoid being in the open during the day to avoid the hawks but the owls hammer them at night in their nests.

Got one squirrel back here now. He's been making mating noises for the past couple of weeks. Looking for a female is my guess.

Late winter and early spring, I could count twenty or more in my back yard. My big beech tree had a great year but the acorn crop this year is zilch and now have only three regulars. I suspect there will be more that show up when I start throwing out some corn.

A friend of mine here in WI was mentioning they used to do an annual squirrel hunt and would get 20-30 tree rats in a half of days hunting. Now they’re lucky to see one, BUT there are more than a couple bobcats that moved in over the last several years. A friend of his had a cat tag and trapped on his land and trapped four bobcats while trapping coon and coyotes…

he seems to think it was the bobcats thinning the population.

The neighbor and I have relocated over 160 of them in the last year. We quit counting. There are fewer right now since the acorn crop is nonexistent around here(Houston area). Put a bird feeder up and you will have plenty. Never seen a squirrel that could refuse sunflower seeds.

When I went back east, last spring, I had hundreds of squirrels running around my property. I’ve been back for a little over 2 weeks and I’ve only seen one!
I had loaded up on 22LR and brought my Savage Anschutz out with me so I could blast the little suckers. They’re all gone!
Was there a plague?
Do they have ESP and knew I was gearing up?

All you have to do is put a few bird feeders around your property. The squirrels will come a running.

Hi Nick! I’m in Texas now! I put out 150 pounds of deer feed a week! The squirrels used to come running. Now they’re gone!
