Anybody use one? Looking for something other than my RCBS case micrometer.
I found a place that makes some like the Davidson but looking at $70.00 plus SH if I remember right. Mostly shooting 200-300 walk and paste matches so don't need anything too fancy. I'm not really into the Hornady ones, I'm sure they work but don't rub me the right way.I got one years ago. Sinclair maybe? It's still in a drawer somewhere I think. There are obviously calibers not covered with the tool having only 6 sides. I have fairly large hands but the size still makes it clunky & a pain to use juggling 3 items. I use Davidson seating depth checkers which attach to your calipers with a small set screw. They were made long before that Hornady thing or its predecessor at about $8 each per caliber (.17 thru .458 no .20) & infinitely handier. Unsure if anybody continues making these since Alvin closed his shop but I sure prefer them over the others.
Right. Everybody gets their own numbers from whatever device they are using. The Hornady and Sinclair inserts will give totally different measurements for my BTO with all calibers.I have had two Sinclair's (6mm and 6.5mm are on different ones) for years and used them exclusively. When you think about how you use a comparator, it really has little to do with the "absolute" measurement compared to a standard and everything to do with the "relative" measurement compared to the rifle. In other words, if your rifle shoots best at 3.34" in the comparitor, then who cares what 3.34" really represents - it's relative to your barrel.
I recently purchased a Hornaday comparitor set, mostly because they appeared to be easier to use and they are. But they also aren't even close to the measurements from the "hex" comparators. Which is right? I don't really care, because it is all relative. I had to go back through and re measure my OAL to the lands, but the ease of use of the Hornaday system is worth it.
This only tells you THOSE two are not the same. But again, lets not get too technical about nut sizing.By having two!!
