Henry AR7

Today I got a Henry AR7. The price was right and I liked the history of it. I can not wait to try it out.
The only thing I do not like is the lack of muzzle threads. I suppose I wlll replace with a threaded barrel at some point.
Do any of you shoot the AR7, either the Henry or one of the earlier makes?

My first and only exposure to this design was almost 30 years ago. My grandparents had one of these stashed in the corner of the farmhouse office for pest control. It was introduced to me as a bolt action; you had to work the little button slidey-in-and-out thingy manually for each shot because.... we used shotshells in it. I have no idea if it functioned correctly or not because I never saw anything other than a nickel casing with a blue shot cup loaded in the magazine. Mind you, my extended family has never really been the gun enthusiast type. So, it's baffling to me looking back how for the intended purpose more practical and ubiquitous designs like the Marlin bolt action were somehow overlooked for a chunky takedown floaty thing. I couldn't have been much more than 10 at the time, but I remember clearly the takedown screw, crappy fixed sight, barrel retainer ring, and yeah that little charging handle that resembled a .22 shell that slid in and out of the bolt. I might just need to find one now, and try shooting some blackbirds off of a cherry tree for old times sake.

The ONLY issue I ever had with mine was that the barrel would loosen after 20 or 30 rounds. Just had to remember tightening it every few magazines.
And I had the one manufactured by the manufacturer with the worst reputation! It was still a fun little gun. YMMV

I had one in the mid 80's. Not super reliable nor accurate and the stock was large. At the time i thought it was neat and I dont even know where that gun ever ended up.

I have one of the early models. CCI Standard Velocity doesn't work the action but is more accurate than the hyper stuff.

I like it because it fits nicely into my back pack that I take with me when I go bow hunting for deer. Turkeys pi$$ me off when I am hunting deer. Deer don't like them either. (the turkeys not the 22)

I've got a Henry Survival Rifle. It's more of a novelty than an every-day shooter. Both my kids and I usually reach for the 10/22 before the Henry. It is accurate enough for small game but can be very picky about ammo. Mine seems to have a definite preference for round nose bullets. I've also got a couple different magazines for it. I'm not sure of the brand but, one of the aftermarket mags is absolute junk. The others all work okay. Figure out what ammo works best and stick with it.
