Helpful hints on getting started with RCBS Chargemaster combo?

Just looking for any helpful hints you all might have to set up/use the chargemaster combo. I've read through manual and the one article I could find here in the forum. Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you plan on using ball powder, use as is out of the box. If you plan on using any extruded powder do yourself a favor and tape off 1/3 of the opening on the powder tube in the bottom of the hopper. Also take a Mcdonalds straw, cut a 2" piece off. Slit it lengthways, so it will overlap itself a little, slide inside the powder tube covering the "threads". This keeps the extruded powder from bunching up in there and dropping out a wad when you only need .1 gr. Plug in at an area that has no flourescent lights and let it warm up for a couple hours before use, preferably all day. Calibrate per instructions. Mine likes to trick itself into thinking it always drops the perfect amount. The pan weighs 99.4 grns, with the pan on and zeroed out, throw a charge. When you take the pan off if it reads -99.4, it is spot on. If it reads -99.5, the charge is .1 grn heavy. With varget that is 2 kernals, same with 4831sc. Benchmark is 5-6 kernals. When I pour the charge in the case and the scale says -99.4 it all goes in, if it says -99.5 I hold back 2 kernals of varget or what ever the powder is kernal#/.1 grn.

Thank you for the tip about taping up 1/3rd of the opening in the hopper. I stopped loading stick powder with mine and reverted to using a powder measure set at .5gr under and topping up by hand. I will give it another try with your trick.
Something small that i found was that if you recall a charge from memory and press dispense, it runs through all the cartridge info on the display before showing the final charge weight, wasting a lot of time. If you however just type in the weight and press dispense, you can save a couple of seconds per charge.

what ever you do make sure the powder drain is closed before you put the powder in......makes a mess if you don't.

The tape trick helps with half the problems, but the straw trick is the real deal. I cannot claim credit for these tips, I found them at snipershide.com. When I read about the straw tip I was like yeah right like a Mcdonalds straw is gonna make a difference. It sure does, it covers those threads and keeps extruded powders from coming out in clumps. When it gets down to the stop-trickle-stop-trickle stage, varget just drops 1-2 kernals at a time, always. Its pretty slick, plus you can't beat the price of a Mcdonalds straw.

I hope other brands of straws will work or i am screwed as I would never buy, beg, borrow,or even steal a straw from a firm that buy's there beef from south america!!!!

Done that a few times. ;D Not too pretty.

Also, wipe down the plastic windshield and other plastic removable parts with a dryer sheet to kill any static cling that may occur.

Oh. don't even try to dispense Bullseye powder. It'll dispense it perfect, give a very accurate charge, and do it quick, but getting all that powder out when you are done is a nightmare.

About that fluorescent light warning: how serious a problem it? My loading bench is in my fluorescent lighted basement. Do I turn them all off and use an incandescent desk lamp. Can the scale be shielded. On another note: last night I noticed that if you "hover" the powder pan above thome scale's plate I saw a change in the weight readout. Magnetic field from the powder pan?

medic727......mine did this also......you need to wipe it down good with a dryer sheet to get rid of the static and make sure you remove and wipe the plastic piece the pan sits on.......doing this fixed mine (had to do it twice)

I hear you bozo699, I raise show cattle and I beleive my straw came from the gas station (its red). Most fast food beef is grass fed and arrived from out of country. What to do? I got stuck sitting next to some lib on a plane to NYC and all she could do was sing the virtues of grass fed beef to me after I commented on what I do for a living. From now on I don't talk to people on planes.

Adam, That gal might even flip Republican if she ever ate any real meat...

bout drained my wallet getting drinks from the flight attendant. Yeah real joy getting to hear how the obesity problem today is caused by grain fed livestock. Pretty sure a generation ago when people actually had to work outside in the heat and dead of winter doing manual labor they ate grain fed beef, pork, and chicken and they weren't fat. I tried to explain that if farmers tried to just grow organic crops and hormone/antibiotic free meat this country, and many other countries we produce food for, would be SOL and go hungry. You can't reason with people like that. I did ask her if she voted for Obama, she did and was very pleased with the job he is doing. I cut off all communications with her at this point.
