Help

I am shooting at 300yds and my groups are going everywhere.

Here is the problem. Using a bipod I get vertical (2.5-3") with little horizontal (less than 1"). When I removed the bipod and shoot on a rest, I get horizontal stringing with basicaly NO vertical.

I'm guessing my basic setup is bad? Maybe my bedding is bad?

btw, bipod is rested on a piece of carpet and not on the hard bench. Anyone experienced this before? Also, I am using a cheap rest. I'm wondering if upgrading the rest will remove the horizontal?

Might I suggest you provide a bit more info as to caliber, etx. However, the vertical grouping does suggest to me that the rifle is moving up and down and that could be several issues that need to be isolated. Are you using a rear bag or are you just shouldering the rifle? Have you attempted to move in to say 100 yds and then check the grouping? Too many unanswered questions to be sure. Just a thought.

Vertical with Bi-pod may be from the rifle jumping on recoil. The fact that you don't have it when shooting from a rest would support that. The horizontal stringing on the rest suggest it is related to your hold. Cheek pressure alone can do this. Focus on technique.
