Help with scope/ rifle problem.

I have a Savage model 12 with a Leupy 6.5-20 VX3 mounted in Leupy adj. bases and rings. As you can see from the pic, the scope isn't even close to being centered over the bore. It looks like the action has been drilled off center when actually it's not. I had to use all the travel in the adj base in order to get the rifle on paper without using all the windage in the scope adjustment. The rifle as you see it is zeroed at 100 and shoots down the middle all the way to 300,farthest I've shot it). Am I missing something? Is there a simple explanation for the scope to be pointing so far out of alignment with the barrel?

I installed two 3" sunshades to help show the misalignment. If I had a mirage tube mounted to the scope, the end of it would be 1/2" to the right of the barrel.

Thanks for any help.
Steve

Can you get us a pic with the rings and bases mounted, but no scope.

Could be a number of issues from the action to the base or rings.

US Optics and TPS also make a picatinny bases for Savages.

Think your problem is in the base and rings. Get a Ken Farrel base and a set of Burris Signiture offset rings.

+1

I have encountered Leupold STD bases that were off center on a few occasions. Unfortunately this isn't a rarity with some of the newer production Leupold products :,

i have the exact problem. the rifle is a savage bt. the rings and bases are nightforce, so i know that isnt' the problem. i contacted savage about the problem and they wouldnt' touch it. i let a "gunsmith" try to fix it but it ended up worse. the rifle now is a iron sight only gun.
best of luck with your rifle,
blake makison

I note the barrel appears fluted. Are you using the original barrel nut and recoil lug? If these are not faced properly and there is enough play in the threads, your barrel could be crooked. I've seen this issue with Dan Wesson pistols.

If you take a taught string across the exact center of the sight base screwholes, and carry that forward, where does it end up in terms of the center of the bore?

I appreciate all you guys trying to help me out but I have to ask. If the rings were "crooked" or the bases were drilled off center or the action was drilled off center, when the bullets are hitting where the scope is pointing, shouldn't the scope be directly over the bore or very close to it? To put it another way. The scope is pointing right and the barrel is pointing left, from behind the rifle) so at 100 yds they would appear to be pointing in 2 totally different directions, very far apart, but the bullets go where the crosshairs are pointing. Does that make any sense? If I were to bore sight this rifle, my shots would be 3 feet to the right with the crosshairs lined up with the bore. I'm gonna put another scope on it this weekend and try it. When I remove the Leupy, I'll get some pics of the rings and bases alone. I originally had a set of Weaver type bases and another brand of windage adjustable rings mounted on this rifle with the same problem, should've mentioned this earlier, sorry). I'll keep y'all posted on the results.
Mod...the barrel and nut have never been changed yet. If the new scope doesn't change anything, I guess I'll find out how Savage feels about my camo job.

Thanks a lot.
Steve.
