Help with new DPMS LR 308

Hey guys I bought this DPMS lr .308 and I thought I was going to use it for match but don't think so. Going with a savage F for f class open.
Anyhow i paid 1500 for the 308 and I am very new to this style of firearm. I do not think it is new for some reason...? In the magazine i can't find a 308 that looks like mine.
A2 stock, low pro upper with rear detachable sight.Fore grip is all aluminum with 4 integral picatinny rails

I really want to mount a decent vari power tactical scope for hunting deer ans coyote. But the front site is in the way is it not? What to do there?
I need quick acquisition of targets and at times a slow 200 yard shot; so a bit of power needed.maybe 3 to 9 power
Need some help here please, links, advise, opinions, lay it on me.

fellers: I cannot comment about your particular DPMS 308, don't know anything about them, but I am famaliar with the top of the gas block/front sight "post", and how high it is in relation to the objective of the mounted scope. One of my uppers is a Colt "flatop", weaver base, Bushmaster riser blocks, with medium height Burris Signature zee rings. Scope is a Leupold VX-1 4-12x 40mm objective. Front sight is the traditional non-removable G.I. for use with the carry handle rear iron sight. When you look at the side profile, it seems obvious that when looking thru the scope, you will see the blurred front sight: not true: at any power setting 4x to 12x, I cannot see anything except a clear view downrange. Front sight is not visable. Some measurements for reference: Centerline of the scope is 2 1/2" above the centerline of the bore. Top of the front sight, the protective "ears") is 2 5/8" above the centerline of the bore. It's been explained to me by people a lot more knowledgable than I about optice, that the scope will not focus on an extremely close object, like the front sight, so it is "invisable". Another one of those mysteries of life, I guess.

SO I can mount pretty much any scope I want on the bottom rail and have no problem. That is very cool. Now one more question if you don't mind. is their a system out there or a way i can quickly interchange between say red dot/acog/laser and a regular scope without losing zeroes every time I change them?

fellers: Again, I have to limit my answer to what I've experienced, not what I think. Have no knowledge of any other optical sight other than a traditional rifle scope. With the Colt H-Bar Flatop, I am able to swap between the scope set-up, used primarily for testing loads for accuracy), and the iron sight carry handle, for NRA Hi Power & CMP matches), with no sight adjustment required--ever. That's another advantage of the Flatop over the fixed carry-handle: return to zero, every time.

Hopefully i can help answer both you questions here. i have the DPMS "twenty four" in .223 ... when i ordered the rifle the pics showed a flat top/smooth handgaurd sightless setup ...when it came in i noticed right away it had the removable carry handle with a removable from sight, and a stardard m-16 looking handgaurd - looked NOTHING like the picture...so when i called they explained that if i went under the build a rifle section it was all optional, BUT the handle is very actually handy. Weaver makes these wedge AR-15 rail mounts, like 25 bucks each) i keep my optics mounted to "ATN Ultrasite" and a "burris ffII 2-7" they screw through the bottom of the handle and kinda wedges itself center ....works great i can usually go from holo sight to scope and still shoot quater size groups at 100...hopefully its a bit of help :thumb:

I was just looking up your gun and im a bit confused....do you have the carry handle/sight or actual rear irons? heres a link for the mount i use, lil cheaper online) i almost feel violated by the price LOL http://www.amazon.com/AR-15-Scope-Mount-Weaver-Rail/dp/B000FX305O Also one of buddies deerhunts with a .308 Bushmaster ....he got the cabela's Leverrevolution scope.,made for lever guns) but seems pretty damn accurate with his AR...how ya like that savage? was looking at one. seems like alot of gun for $1200

jpatnode: I agree, if you have a fixed carry handle and want to mount a scope or other optical device, the weaver mount that fits in the "channel" is an,only ?) option. tried to use them over the years, and the limitations to be aware of,, in my opinion) are: keep a close check on the tightness of the underside attach nut. I had them back-off and become lose after 25 to 30 rds. Had better luck making them super tight, with a lock washer. Must be the vibration thru the carry handle, with the bolt cyceling underneath that can cause them to loosen. When sighting-in, then removing, then re-mounting, it always required considerable adjustment to again sight-in. I think there is too much slop between the channel and the Weaver base mount, making it difficult to mount in the same position as previous. The center-line of the scope is approx. 4 1/2" above the bore: really high, and difficult to get a good cheek weld, unless using the delta attachment. All reasons why the Flatop version remains my favorite and glad the CMP has finally approved it for Service Rifle Competition.:)

one option but quite a bit more pricey is the EOTech red dot holosight with removable 3x magnifier...totally sweet setup for flat top but runs around $900 bucks...ill try to get a link for ya

My gun has a detachable rear sight. Completely flat upper with 4 rail picatinny hand guard. Looks to be carbine size to me. The front sight is Not removable from the barrell unless I actually cut it off.
I think I am going to put a trijicon 3x0 illuminated reticle for around a 650 and a holo or red dot sight on the scope itself.
I seen a very sweet setup to mount it to the scope. So we'll see.
I wanted this to shoot match but it is not going to be doable I think. So it will become a hunting rifle for distance and close up drives when I kick deer up20 feet from me I guess.Plinking at the range. My savage will do the dirty work for comps I guess.
This scope here

I'll post a picture of the rifle in the morning. I am thoroughly beat from a deep powder day at gore today. Man what a winter were getting here in Northern and Central NY. SA=weet :)

should of taken a look at your link before I posted. I like that setup alot. Would do the job nicely. Night vision capable to be nice for coyotes.
