help with my 6mmbr

Hi, I have been doing some testing with primers in my 6mmbr, its a BAT,Krieger finished at 30", .268 nk, I started with the fed 205 primers and seemed to always have some vertical in my groups, so I tried the cci br4 and the 450 magnum primers, my es went down to the 3' to 6' per second range, but other problems started, I started having primers not ignite, and today I pierced one. my load is 31.7 grains of RE15, SMK 107 .010 into the lands. I realize this will be viewed as a very hot load by some, but until I switched the the cci primers it worked good, it just had vertical in each group, and when the cci primers worked there is no vertical and great es over the chrono could this be a firing pin problem or a spring problem or what are your opinions? I could work thru one of the two problems, but what would cause non fires and piercing at the same day at the range? thaks, Ron Tilley

I am using 31.3 RE-15 in a load for my 6BR.I also use CCI 450 and the Fed 205 magnum primer, both are very good on E/S and grouping with a 95 gr bullet.I never had a missfire or pierced primer. I could go up with the charge as pressure is still in check but don't feel the need as I think I found a node for my barrel bullet combination. anyhow, I have not experienced any primer problems with my charge of RE-15 at 31.3 grs.

My experience has been just the opposite. I find the 205/205M to be very soft and easy to pierce whereas the CCIs are tougher and hold up much better. I think one of the reasons 205s are so popular with custom actions is that the firing pins and springs are lighter and more susceptible to misfires with primers that are "harder".

One of my customized Savage actions would not fire a primer until the tension on the spring was adjusted up. Don't have any experience with BATs because, unfortunately, mine hasn't come yet.

You are exactly correct. Federal Primers are softer. I have to add spring tention for CCIs, and Winchester primers. Russian Primers are also hard.

Ron, you took a hot load tuned on a non-mag primer and then added a mag primer...did the velocities change? I gotta think you went up a bit...

I forgot to add that my 6BR action is a trued Remington 700 and have shot hundreds of the Federal 205 magnums in it and a Ruger number 1 varmint chambered in 223.
I know some guy's have had problems with the softer Federals but I honestly haven't seen it yet with my chamberings and cartridges but I do watch for piercing with these primers.

JB, it did in fact go up! it increased 18fps with the 450 mag primers. Ron

just a follow up, I have since this post started, sent the bolt in this gun back to BAT and they replaced the firing pin spring, saying that it had weakened by quite alot, its enroute back to me now and hopefully trouble free. thank you for taking time to offer help. Ron Tilley

Steve,

You mean 205 Match primers, not magnum, right? I'm not trying to start trouble, I've just never seen a FED 205 Magnum primer.

Thanks,
