Help with hunting rifle bottom metal

I haven't put a custom hunting rifle together in a while and I'm not up to speed on what to get (or if my parts will even work together). I have slowly assembled parts here and there. I have had a used Kelbly Atlas Tactical short action mag bolt face sitting on the shelf for a while. I bought a Proof 30 cal carbon blank I plan to finish around 18" and will have a Scythe suppressor attached. I bought a used Stocky's carbon lightweight hunting stock that has a bdl inlet. This will be a medium weight 300wsm elk rifle.

My question is, is there a solution to use a BDL cut stock with a M5 cut action with "BDL" bottom metal? If not, is there a detachable "flush" mag system that will work in my situation (and preferably doesn't cost $400!)?

Thanks in advance.

PS, I weighed the stock, barrel blank, and action and it was 5lb 3oz. Anyone have an educated guess how much the complete rifle with a 21oz razor lht will weigh?

I did a conversion from BDL to M5 last year. I’m a little foggy on how much material I had to remove but I have the gun with me. I just migrated to Delaware and I’m unpacking everything. I’ll try to find it tomorrow and get some pics.
You can use a thickened epoxy to fill in the voids. What color is the stock? Black is easy. Matching other colors gets tricky.

Black should work. You're saying use a flush M5 DBM like PTG Stealth/etc and remove material on the stock to make it fit, correct?

BDL flush mag about the only thing I’m aware of is HS Precision…be seated when you look at the price, they are proud of them. Not sure if they have a short magnum mag though. Wyatt’s has a system but it’s not a flush mag like you requested.

M5 is Hawkins Hunter and Terminus and Curtis at one time made one too.

Good luck!

If your action isn't cut to feed out of a standard internal box magazine you can use a Wyatts center feed box.

Otherwise the only other external magazine system for a bdl cut I know of is the HS Precision one mentioned above. I have one in a rifle and it works well. Not cheap but either is the Hawkins hunter system.

No. Even a 5 round AICS magazine sticks down an inch. I’m suggesting a Remington box, spring, follower and bottom metal. It will be flush and you’ll fill around it with the epoxy.
I like “flush” and AICS magazines so I make a stock that does that.

Hawkins and Mack both make a flush fit detachable Mag. It hangs down maybe 1/8”.

I know you can get the Hawkins for WSM, not sure about the Mack.

If the action is just AI cut and not AW, I don’t see any reason you can’t just use a plain BDL.

There is a bottom metal made in Austrailia or New Zeeland that fits bdl and takes aics mags. They are a little over $200 shipped. The only thing that I've done so far is drop a Accurate Mag WSM mag in it and it locked up correctly. I'll try to remember and get the company name. Didn't take long to get it. And seeing that I HAVEN'T USED IT, IT MIGHT BE AVAILABLE.

Atlas make the in Australia and they can be purchased direct or on eBay. A nice thing is you can use a hidden or extended release lever in the same bottom metal and you can buy either as a part fairly cheap

I ordered the Wyatt CFE-5 kit. I have an extra BDL floorplate I'll use. It'll only hold 2 down, but that's not a deal breaker for elk hunting. Hopefully this'll be a plug-n-play and function 100%. I'll give an update, but it'll be awhile.

There is also at least one company here in the US thats making a BDL cut bottom metal that takes AI mags but cant remember who it is. Maybe APA or UNKNOWN MUNITIONS, I will try and find it. The company also has flush mags for it.

Atlasworks Elite series bottom metal, Takes AI Mags, fits the BDL footprint and pillar height, but needs a tiny bit of the mag well on the stock opened up, doable by hand with a good file.

Those CFE boxes need to be supported by the bottom of the receiver.

I called Wyatt's and explained my situation and the guy said this is the exact situation for which they make this product. We'll see I guess. It was only ~$70 vs the ~250 for the other products.

Have you used this personally? No complaints? I have several BDL pattern hunting rigs I am considering switching over.
No I haven't used one yet but I have had one in hand. They are light weight and seem to be good quality. Apparently their M5 isn't a true M5 for patent reasons at this stage.

I'm still deciding on a couple of stock / chassis. If I end up with a stock that needs a bottom metal I'll probably go the atlas because of the versatility. Hawkins would be better if your willing the pay the extra. I like the Hawkins flush fit AI mags and will probably run them in either.
