Help with f class action

Long time lurker, first time poster. Long story short. I want to get into f class type shooting. Might try a match one day, might never go to one at all. Probably the latter would be more accurate. Been shooting mostly prone for 5 years off a bipod, rear bag and a repeater actions (defiance tenacity, bighorn origin.) I would like to build an f class style rifle in either 223 rem or 6br. I've been looking at actions to build on, and was looking for some opinions.

I'd like a single shot action, but not really looking to pay a fortune for the action as this is my first one. Was wondering if a PT&G b12 was any good? Or a blueprinted rem 700 would be sufficient. Any other options?

Thanks!

A few words of advice
In this hobby cheap is cheap and to fix cost is 2x as much.
Buy once cry once buy 2x cry 2x
go to a match a few times watch what guys are shooting ask a lot of questions.
Look on here and buy a good used rifle and practice.
Don't listen to the guys behind the LGS counter for what you need. They just want to sell stuff

Use the action you have, repeaters are plenty accurate to get you started to see if you enjoy the game or not.

Remington 700's have won plenty of matches, barrels are what make the overall difference. Ergonomics is the advantage of a "great" single shot. If it was me, look in the classifies and find a used rifle from someone leaving the sport.

Thud and LVLAaron gave you great advice.

Go to an F-Class event and shoot with your current setup just to see if you like it. We have guys the shoot at our mid-range club matches with hunting guns. It's going to be a big investment so be sure you enjoy it.

A full-blown competitive F-Class rifle, scope, front rest and back rest or going to cost you in the range of $9000+.... and then you have the reloading components. In my opinion, the only reason to build at F-Class rifle is to be competitive.

BAT, KELBY, OR BORDEN are the actions people are winning with at the top level. There is a reason for that and it's not because they didn't know that you can blueprint a REM 700 action. If you are going to shoot F-Class with a dedicated F-Class rifle, buy a single feed and not a repeater, they are stiffer and have more bedding area for supporting the heavy barrel you will need for F-Class.

I'll give you an alternative you can think about....

I got my High Master classification in 600 Mid-range with my PRS rifle chambered in 6BRA.
It was a MPA Chassis, Defiance Ruckus action (repeater with single shot sled in place of magazine), a Phoenix sled style bipod, and an f-Class style rear rest. That setup was plenty competitive for 600-Yard club matches with light wind.

Building something like this might be more appropriate because you don't sound like you are fully committed to shooting F-Class. You would have something that shoots sub 1/2 MOA all day long and would be much cheaper to build than a dedicated f-class rifle.

Even an old Single Shot 40X with a PTG coned bolt, a good barrel and stock will get you started.
Maybe think of a 6 Dasher if your going 6mm and 1000 Yds. If It's a .223 you'll need a fast twst 1-7 or faster to shoot 80+ grn bullets

Borden, Kelby, Bat, Defiance are all good ones.
Put a good stock, trigger, barrel and scope with a good smith putting it together then it’s up to the nut behind the bolt the rifle will do it’s part

I say please go and at least watch a Match or participate with whatever you have available,
before you purchase anything...please listen to these words Sir....Its so much more expensive to do it twice.
Your gonna have a blast... and ask questions beforehand and afterwards, just don't interrupt during the event.
Its the most fun you can have with your clothes on. so what ya waitin for.

The reason I said I probably wouldn't participate in a match is because I'm in upstate NY, outside of Monroe county. I found one place within 150 miles of me that has not updated thier website in a year and only did matches out to 300 yards.

My plan was to buy a cheaper action, with a TT diamond or Jewell. Get a stock from the urbanrifleman, and a barrel either from him or another cheaper source. I have a bald eagle front rest and a few different rear bags.
I already reload for 6br.

Just planning on getting my feet wet in this area. Not going to dump 5k with the buy once cry once motto, and then find out that it's really not for me.

I will try to find some f class comps near me, and observe and try and talk to some folks after. I will start looking at bat and borden actions as well. Thanks fellas

If you are dead set on a 223, then shoot in the FT-R division. As others have posted, there are many cartridges in 6mm that will beat the wind better than a straight 6br. Also, take a hard look at what Kelbly's have to offer. Not only is their f class action as good as it gets, but they offer an Atlas action that is still leagues above a Remington action, the cost won't break the bank.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I picked up a used Savage 12 recently with a Leupold fixed 30X and two Shilen barrels (.222 and .223) for $700. I couldn't find any .222 brass so I switched to the .223. It shoots less than half moa 5 shot groups at 100 if the oddball behind the gun does his part. I think it is quite amazing myself! There are not many venues for F Class regardless of where you live. Most drive hours to a match or a range that offers distances out to 600 yards and good luck finding 1,000 yard ranges! That's why I shoot two used Savages (the other a straight 284) behind my house in a swamp. About half a dozen of us shoot F class matches on my rough and tumble range and have a great time. I consider us very lucky. So before you invest thousands in a high end F class rig think about where the nearest range is (travel costs, how much it will cost you to shoot there; membership, hourly rate) and your time.

And before you jump into this rabbit hole, follow the advise of some of the others here and find the nearest match and check it out and see whether you like the folks and what are the requirements and costs for access to their facilities. I know, reality sucks. :)

JMO...

Yes, try what you have, which sounds shootable and will at least give you a baseline, as well as reference point, to the other guns.

It may be true that actions retain value well, but you still have to spend the money upfront to get them.

F-class’s chief criticism is that it’s an equipment race, and as that is not universally appealing, try it first.

If you are considering both .223 and 6BR in one action, with two bolts, you would want to look at single shot actions that won’t exclude you from the TR weight limit of 8.25 Kg, overall.

I might suggest that two bolts and one action is not that much different in price from two actions with their own bolts, where the Open action can be significantly more robust, to handle longer and heavier barrels, without costing much more at all than smaller action choices.

I am looking at this action for my next f-open project
what do you think?

Im a big fan of Borden, Kelblys and Bat
And honestly don’t know much about any of the many good or great others out there.
Zero experience with the new stuff but you have many choices for sure.
