Help with build in 6 x 47 Lapua please?

I'm wanting a rifle to play at longer ranges. 90% of my shooting will be at 100 & 200 yards from the bench, with the occasional trip out to the desert for punching milk jugs at long range.
I also hope to do some PD trips and would bring this gun along as a compliment to my 204 for longer shots.

I don't anticipate shooting competitively so I'm not concerned with compliance to any regs.

Based on a visit to my gunsmith here is what I've decided to include in the build:

-Pierce Single Shot Action with Tactical knob
-Kreiger 1/10" twist bbl (for the 95gr SMK and lighter bullets) in the "light palma" contour, about 26" long
- Jewell 6oz trigger
- Holland "blank bottom" muzzle brake
- Scope base & rings ???
- Scope - considering SIII 8 x 32 x 56 but would rather have something in a varmint reticle as I'm not one who enjoys clicking too much
- Stock: this is the real head scratcher. I'd like something along the lines of a varmint/tactical but need it to work with the single shot action. I'd like an adjustable cheek section in the comb. The B&C M-5 Medalist looks about like what would fit the bill but I can't see that it comes in an SS version. I'd also like a forend that is a bit more rounded off than the B&C M-5. Do folks fill in the mag well and repaint? I've looked at the Manners web site but the $$ seem to be more than I can do.

Advice on scopes and stocks for this project would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Mike

Re: Help with Pierce SS build in 6 x 47 Lapua please?

It seems to me that the 10" twist is too slow for the 95 Sierra. I have a 6mm Remington with a 9" twist and 25.5" barrel. When driven to ~3250 fps, I get good results. They did not perform well at 3000 and that was in warm weather. The 6x47L should be able to achieve >3200 in a 26" barrel. Also be sure to try the 58g Hornady V-Max. It is very accurate and velocities are excellent.

Krieger makes a good barrel as do many others. You might also consider a Bartlein or Brux.

So 1/8" would be a desired twist for bullets ranging to 95 grains?
I had a look at the Manners sight and it looks like one of his stocks will work for me. I have to call them and see which models are available in a blind mag configuration.

My 'Smith is supplying the Kreiger bbl at $300 plus installation.

Re: Help with Pierce SS build in 6 x 47 Lapua please?

The 8" twist would handle bullets up through 108. The 115s need a little faster twist. I have a 7.5" Bartlein sitting in my closet destined for a long-action 700 currently chambered in 6.5-284. Since I have another 6.5-284, I would like to try a 6mm Remington to shoot the long bullets. A stiff load of RL22 should provide ~3200 from a 30" barrel.

Manners makes excellent stocks and several have adjustable cheekpieces. Your gunsmith's barrel price is reasonable and about what you would pay direct from Krieger.

Another excellent bullet to try is the Berger 80g Match Varmint flatbase. It stabilizes easily and is very accurate.

Thanks Steve
Midway wants $240 for a Jewell trigger. Which model is considered the shizzle for this kind of build and where can I buy it for the $175 I've seen referenced here and there?

Larry Scott carries just about all the Jewell triggers. Take a look at the feature sets and one is almost certainly right for your application.

Update:
My 6x47L project is coming together fast - maybe too fast for my wallet.

In transit as I type:
- Pierce round Single Shot action with ejector removed
- Pierce BDL style guard and floorplate
- Jewell trigger
- Barrel is 26" Kreiger Heavy Palma contour with Vais brake.
- B & C Medalist # 2956 "Light varmint tactical" stock. Tan with black was desired but black with grey webbing is what was available now and I didn't want to wait 12 weeks for the tan.

I'll buy the scope then figure out the mounts and rings. I love the DNZ one piece base/ring setup and will look to use it if possible.
I'll either use the SIII 8x32 or pony up for a Nightforce. NF will require that I part with something from the gun safe as I have far exceeded my budget for the original idea for this spend: a Savage LRPV.

Re: Help with Pierce SS build in 6 x 47 Lapua please?

Nomo,

I built a switch barrel 700 a couple years ago, when the 6x47L first began to become popular, I had Dan Dowling fit an 1/8 twist Hart barrel with his 6x47L reamer. If I want to be cheap, I shoot the 105 Amax and settle with 1/2 inch groups. If I spend a little more and feed it Bergers, I can get groups about 1/4 inch. I am very glad that I got an 8 twist, but my only purpose was to shoot longer distances.
