Help with barrel length

Ive got a new build here ready to shoot as soon as my scope gets here....but as I was finishing the stock I happen to notice something "wasnt right"..?? I had ordered this setup from the smith and had said I wanted a 26" barrel in the Rem varmint taper. What Ive got ..after measuring..is a 22" barrel with that taper.

Now...just how much velocity am I going to lose with this 6mmBR with 4" less barrel? Any amount to amount to doodlie squat? Accuracy? I intend on shooting "about" 105 gr slugs of various brands but will delve into say an 85 grainer or such to wipe out a grounghog at times. Will accuracy suffer any?

Anyway...Im trying to decide whether to keep the short barrel and run with it...or hould out till the smith can get me a 26 inches..???

Did you include the threads, which is almost an inch, in your measurement?

Regardless, I really wouldn't worry about it. In fact, 22-23" is my go to length for all my hunting stuff, unless it's strictly off the bench type shooting where weight isn't a concern. Any velocity loss is hardly a consideration to fret over, especially in a 6 BR, and accuracy may, in fact, be better, in the short, fat barrel. Certainly not worse.

It's in your hot little mitts now, make the most of it.

Barrels typically are measured from the bolt face to the muzzle, which includes the threads.

Unless the threads are 4 inchs long I would wait for the barrel to be replaced. You paid for a 26 inch barrel and you didn't get it. With the economy the way it is any craftsman of any type should be paying atention to detail. That is a big OH $#!% mistake in my book.

You can close the bolt on an empty chamber, carefully insert a cleaning rod or a dowel into your barrel (muzzle first) until it stops. Make a mark. Measure.

If your 4" or 3" under what you specified with your smith, I'd be making a phone call. There's a lot of difference between 26" and 23". Principle and all that.

I'm sorry your having trouble just take about 1in off your barrel measurement and that's close enough don't sweat it if shoots good, but look for a good gunsmith soon.

Whether its 25 1/4....or 26 1/8...etc dont make a big bit of difference.....Its the difference between 23" and 26" is what Im stewing over. Ive already told the builder that I wont fire any rounds thru this barrel and he says he can pull it and rechamber for a different 6mm caliber. So thats what Im doing....just adding more and more coats of stock finish on it.

Welcome to shooting , deal with a gunsmith that only does bench work not a fix all, you have 2 questions- to ask - do you use live pilot, and do you dial indicate off the bore. This stuff hurts but everyone has been there and because of this you learn the sport.

Sully2: I know it's after the fact, too late now, but I always include a written list detailing the requirements of any and all my re-barreling jobs. Finished barrel length is one of those items listed.

One copy goes to the gunsmith and is reviewed in his presense. I keep a duplicate copy.

In the dozens of barreling, pillar bedding, stock inletting, etc. jobs done I have never had a single "mis-understanding".

Just something to consider in the future. ;)

On previous rifles he and I always exchanged e-mails on everything.....but he told me that he verbally made me aware that the barrel company sent him a barrel that was shorter than I asked for...and that I had verbally agreed.....????

At present we are waiting on the barrel company to bore some more 6mm's and then turn them to the Rem Varmint contour and send him one and he is willing to replace it at no cost to me because of the "mix-up". So I just have to wait awhile is all.

Im hopping to get it all done because my scope came back from Zeiss yesterday and Im chomping at the bit to get it mounted. I still need to load a few rounds so that first warm day I can hit the range and get it sighted in good.
