I have a Savage F10 small action with a LW 8 Twist barrel. It is reasonably accurate and shoots in the .2's when I get lucky, and .3's fairly consistently shooting a 105 scenar over 30.3 grains of N 150.
I have been wanting to try Varget. However herein lies my delimna. Most of the loads I have come across for the 105 are in the 30+ grain levels.
I have run numbers in QuickLoad which suggest all of the loads are above safe levels. I have shot 30.0 Grains of Varget out of my rifle with no evident pressure signs. There are no signs of flattened primers, cratering, sticky bolt, markings on the case etc. I do not own a micrometer so cant say if there is any case head expansion.
I would like to try to use a load in the 30.3-30.5 grain range, and my plan is to load 1 cartridge in 0.1 grain increments to this level in order to see if it would be safe to shoot. If I do not get any pressure signs, then I will repeat the exercise with three cartrdges at each level to verify. Is this a safe approach or am I asking for trouble?>
