help with 284win loads

I cant group them like i would like to any suggestions on loads that work for you guys i know every gun will be different action barrels etc i just want a good starting point. thank u all for the help

We need more info in order to help you. Barrel twist, brass, barrel length, bullet used, powders tried and powder weights tried, etc. etc.

+1 on what erik said. i would also mention the distance you tested at. my first .284 barrel wouldnt shoot the vlds better than .6-.7 moa at 100 yards. i then tested it at 600 and it averaged 2-2.5 inches.

ok sorry it is a bat mb action its a broughton 29 inch barrel 1 in nine twist im shooting 180 grain bergers with 54 grains of H 4831. at 1000 yards in five shots it averages 20 inch groups

Run some of the awesome 162 A-max's through that rifle along with some H4831 SC and you'll more than likely find what your looking for... 57.0 grains will just about be a compressed load, and should not be a pressure problem.........
Seat that bullet with the base right at the neck shoulder junction and go from there.....

54 grains sounds a little on the light side on powder charge. I would increase powder charge watching for pressure signs. But I believe everyone is running about 56.0 grains or so.

Good luck.

Blood hound:

Here are some things to check for.

What is your chamber neck ID. Older chambers has .320-322 neck IDs. Newer chamber neck IDs are .3165-.317. Loaded Lapua brass (no neck turn) is .312 to .3125.

Another is your reamer cut so the bullet seating depth will allow for magazine feed. If so your bullets will be seated to deep in the case for the longer VLD bullets. VLD bullets need to be seated so the bearing surface is no deeper than the shoulder neck junction of the case. This may make your loaded case too long to fit inside the magazine.

Third, you said your barrel is a 1:9 twist 5C Broughton. Have you shot it through a chronograph and do you have extreme spreads in the 60 fps range. Then try slugging your barrel and check for tight and loose spots. I had 3 that would shoot fliers all day and never repeatable groups with the best loading and shooting techniques. I Switched barrels and the problems went away. My extreme spreads are back to single digit.

I have had very good luck with IMR 4350, H4831SC, and Reloader 17

Another thing to check is for donunts. I assume you are using 6.5x284 brass, and necking up. No matter how careful you are, you will get a very small donut expanding up if you are being careful, and a really BIG one if you aren't. I recently went through all this. Rusty is correct...Your loaded round will be right at .312 with unturned brass. My gun is chambered for a .315 neck..that leaves around 1.5 thous neck clearance, which alot of guys will tell you isn't enough for the 284...To cure this problem as well as the donut, I'm using a K&M neck turner with the carbide mandel that has the cutter on the end, so when I turn my neck, it also cuts any donuts out. I'm turning my necks for a loaded round of .310. I spent the last year fighting the .284, trying to make it shoot. After doing the steps above, and switching to a Kreiger 1:8:5 twist, straight tube, its seems that i've finally got the gun shooting and cured my vertical problems. I had a HV contour Bratlein 1:9 twist on the gun before.

Because of all the changes I made, I not sure which one cured my problems. I also believe that the straight barrel helped in the fact that it placed more weigt up front, and now the gun doesn't torque or jump in the front rest as it used to...

Good luck, and don't give up..The 284 does shoot, you just have to make sure things are right..

I start with test loads of 52.5 grains of RE-17 and 140gr Bergers or Nosler Accubonds.

I start with 54 grains of H4831SC and work up to 58 grains as pressure allows again with 140 Bergers.

I seat my Bergers into the rifling. If you back them off the rifling you will have less pressure.

you said you were using 4831, you didnt say if it was shortcut. not trying to nit pick. just wondering.

Pierce, you are nit picking! ;D

Just kidding, good point!

Short cut and long cut have the same burning characteristics. The difference is short cut will load more densely. Most of my .284 loads are close to compressed loads.

Nat, are you talking about a 284 or a 6.5-284?

Rustystud .+1 on the tight /loose/tight barrels. I had one as well, couldnt get it to do anything. The next one which they replaced under warranty is good though.
My favourite powder is H4350 (2209)

wow thank u all for the advice there is a lot i need to look in to sorry about the H4831 i didnt think that it made a difference if it is sc or not be has the same burn rate well any other suggestions let me hear them and i will tell u all how its shooting now thanks
