Help the new guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After hunting for many years I've decided to try a real target rifle. I've decided on the 6mm br. Should I start with a new savage or look for something used from this site? I'd prefer to start simple i.e. no neck turning, just want to get started as cheap and "accurate" as possible. Thanks.

Hi signal7, In my opinion just buy a 6br savage in the model 12 f-class, And enjoy.... ! I've seen them shoot good, And they can be had for $1200 or less and allow you to shoot a factory rifle class in some sanctioned events.

If you're thinking Savage, check out the bulletin for the new dual-port "Benchrest". In 6mmBR that would be a slick set-up. Personally, I like the "improved" stock with a bit of drop and thinner wrist a bit better than the F-Class design.

I'm not a huge fan of the Savage Accutrigger. But I think it's established that the Savages will shoot--particularly when chambered in 6mmBR.

What range? 100/200 or 300 on out ??

Personally I would buy an action, aftermarket bbl and stock to suit what you want to do [ either long range or 'point blank' ie 100/200 ].

Real target rifle is the key phrase. For most types of Benchrest competition, no off the shelf rifle is going to be competitive. My best advice is to go to a match, look around and ask questions, or if you know someone that competes in some type of registered Benchrest competition, pick his brain. On the other hand, if you simply want a rifle that is easier to shoot from the bench, that is another matter.

My personal experiences...

Bought a Rem 700, new barrel, Jewell trigger and nice scope. Had the Rem reworked and chambered for 243 AI. Shoots ok for a field gun.

Then I bought a Nesika in 222 Rem and then a Stolle in 6PPC.

There is a huge difference in the repeatability of accuracy out of the custom rifles. If they are not shooting, I did something wrong reloading.

Group after group, the customs shoot nice little holes, and they are far less finicky working up a load.

Save yourself time, aggravation and money. Do it the right way the first time, go custom.

If you have the money to burn, go the factory rebuild way. I wish I had listened to most on this site.

Thanks,
Tony

signal7 do you have any guns sitting around thst you don't shoot that you can pull the barrel off and use the action? a remington, savage, winchester ect. i had a savage 111 in 7mm mag that i couldn't stand shooting so i pulled the barrel and got a new shilen from midway that was already to go. i got a 6mmbr norma. next i hollowed out the channel to the size of the barrel.next i got an old wichita rest and bought a ctc top made in altoona pa. shot a couple of matches like that. did ok. next i got a rifle basix trigger and new front and rear bags, then i got a richards stock from california. i put a swift 8-32 scope on top worked very well. the last match i went to when i had it all finished. i finished 8th. i was very pleased. well i hope this helps. all together i might have $700 - 800 in the gun.
