Help reloading .300 WSM

Hey I am looking to get into reloading for my .300 WSM. It is a browning m-1000 eclipse which is equipped with a 26" barrel with a 1 in 10" twist. For optics I have a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x50mm LR scope. I currently shoot Winchester super X 180gr bullets out of it because they are very easy to come by. When I sighted the rifle in I shot a 3 shot group at 100 yards in 11/16". I am pretty happy with that but I want to do more long range shooting and as you all know that can get expensive. Also, the Winchesters were all over the place at 800 yards. I would prefer a bullet that is suited for hunting as well as long range shooting. What do you guys recommend? Heavier bullet or lighter bullet? powders etc? I am reading hornady's guide but I still could use some advice so any would be great, thanks.

Win SX ammo is OK for hunting but not long range target work. The bullet is being held in place by the crimp, very little and inconsistent neck tension. The bullets may have been going subsonic at 800 yds.

I used a Savage 12FVSS in .300 WSM for F Class two years ago. Best load was 175 gr SMK over 65 gr H4350. COAL 2.855. Chronod at 2985 fps. Put 5 in 2 inch at 300 metres, 0.6 moa.

Chevy1080,

I'm also shooting a Savage model 12 in 300wsm . Here are some bullets I've had success hunting with, 180 Nosler ballistic tips, 178 Hornaday A-max, and 185 Berger VLDs. All shot over H4350, Win Brass, WLR primers. VLDs are more picky about seating depth so the Noslers and and A-max would be good bullets to start with.

My Winchester Model 70 in 300 WSM with a 24" barrel likes a hunting load of Barnes 180 gr TSX, Winchester case, Mag Primer, and 72 gr of Re-22. It groups at 6" at 500 yards off the bench. It is not a suitable rifle for long range nor is the bullet for that matter. You might try the Hornady 178 gr A-max, I have had good luck with it in other target rifles in the past.
