Help, powder choice for 6.5X47 Lapua

Just go back from shooting my 6.5x47 Lapua

I can't believe the group changes by just switching to BR-4 primers and jamming the VLD's in .010!!!!!!!

If I would have known BR-4's made this big of a difference, I would have gotten them a long time ago!

I cloverleafed several with 123L and 130 Berger/JLK's, still can't believe the difference!

I think I am going to stick with the 123 Lapua's, just a personal perference!

Nice Dennis! I have some of those BR-4's also and a stash of Federal 205 GMM primers. So much for keeping my load development simple. 8)

You might want to look at RL-17 it is great with the 130 - 140 gr. bullets. Avg. for 10 shoots with the 140 was 2968 with very low es like 14, high twos for 10 shots. 130 JLK. 10 shots was low two's with RL-17,they hammer at 1k. they ran around 2950.
Varget varies too much lot to lot for me, and RL-15 is very good also but RL-17 does it faster with less pressure....jim

I just got my Bartlein 8.5 twist barrel chambered in the 6.5 x 47 lapua on Friday. My barrel is finished out at 29.75" I will be using the 130 JLK bullet from Swampworks, if it shoots well. What weight of RL17 Should I be looking at as a starting load? I would love to get 2950 out of this gun without high pressure.

Avg speed was 2,720fps which is "not" enough for 1,000 yds!

Thats easily well above SS at 1,000 yards.

Dennis, how is that Velocity not enough ?? What would you consider adequate and what would be optimal ??

I figured to shoot 1k I would at least have to be in the 2,900 fps range!

If 2,700+ fps is OK, just let me know!

I have a 6.5x47L with a 22" barrel. I'm getting very good results at 2770fps or so with 130gr Bergers jammed 0.010", 41.5gr H4350, and Wolf SRM.

Same load of RL17 got me 2935fps, but the accuracy wasn't there.

I can get in the 2700 range with 35.0grns of Varget and produce a great group!

My question is: Will the 130 Berger make it 1k yds with the above load?

Below is with 34.8 grns Varget, I can produce the same with 35.0! 2,700 to 2,775 fps range.

Great information!

I know if I am able to get 2,950fps, the speed of the bullet should be about 200fps faster @ 1k yds. I know this is going to help in windy situations!
