Help Point Me In The Right Direction

I've been shooting rifles off the bench for over 15 years, including everything from 17 Ackley Hornet to .308. This year I've decided to participate in our range's 600 yard matches, so am taking things to a new level.

I've bought a Savage F Class in 6BR and a Nightforce 12-42 BR scope, and am breaking in the rifle and doing some load work.

In addition to watching and listening to more experienced BR shooters, can anyone point me in the direction of some good reading material on bench rest shooting technique?

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments you believe would be helpful.

Tony Boyers book,Mike Rattigan extreme rifle accuracy, fred Sinclair precision reloading & shooting. Find a mentor to take you in.

One other tip. You've selected a good firearm. Stock is good, action is good (though some run better with only two screws in place rather than three). This gun should shoot in 3s and 4s with good rest set-up and quality handloads. If it doesn't there may be a problem with factory barrel, and don't waste too much ammo chasing it. If accuracy is not good, contact Savage and you may get a new barrel. When your budget allows, put a custom barrel on that gun -- it may open your eyes.

Just check your local club rules. Custom barrel might take gun out of factory class, if your club has that division.

Never pass on opportunity to ask for help, have the best shooters inspect your equipment and ask for help from the best you can find. I always ask a great shot what they feel is most important and get great advice.

Thanks for the feedback....much appreciated.

One of the reasons I decided to do this, is that when I've been around the guys who shoot these matches, they've always been nothing but friendly and helpful. Our range is "out in the country" and fairly informal, so I'm really looking forward to it.

I've got 45 rounds downrange as I break the barrel in, and based on what I've seen thus far, if there's a "shooting failure" it won't be the barrel....more likely the "operator." ???
