help please

hey folks i just got my new stevens 200 in .223. After looking the gun over it is clear to me that there is a few things i want to change. !st i need a new stock something not to expensive but preferably with some sort of bedding, pillar or full lenght bedding block, 2nd i WANT a heavy barrel also nothin real expensive but 1 that will be a good 1. also
i was thinkin about getting the entire gun coated or painted somehow i would like to go with O.D. green perhaps, oh ya the barrel i would like to be no longer than 22inches with a 1:9 i would prefer 20 inches but 22 should work. there is also a few other thing i would like, such as a different bolt handle and knob. now this will be an ongoing project i am sure for some time and it is going to be slow on my end but if you folks could help me with some info on where to find these parts it would be great. this gun is mainly going to be for varmints and deer sized animals. thanks i am looking forward to read what you all have to say.

J, With all due respect, you started with a low end rifle, albeit a good company, don't pour a bunch of hard earned money trying to modify it. Return it or sell it and get what you really wanted without resorting to multiple change outs. In the long range you'll be dollars ahead. If there's a reason you like the Stevens 200 action, just buy the action, and build from there.

After all that, I don't think you mentioned the trigger? You will probably want to replace that too after you try it. Plenty of aftermarket triggers available for that action. Take a look at the Rifle Basix triggers, the Sav. 1 & Sav 2. All of those things that you listed are common changes when using a Stevens gun as a base. It is a great base to customize off of. You will have to think about whether you want a custom barrel, which you might have to go to for a 20"-22" barrel in possibly a varmint contour, unless you just use a factory barrel and cut it down. Lots of barrel makers make pre-fits for Savage guns. You can get a Savage oversized factory bolt handles to fit your need for the bolt handle. Their are after markets available. Plenty of aftermarket stocks available for that action. If the mag is attached to the action, then you have a staggered feed, and it is a 4.25" spacing between the screws, and you'll have a "small shank" barrel. If the mag separates from the action, then you have a centerfeed and that means that you have a 4.40 spacing between the screws and have what is called a "large shank" barrel. You'll need to know these things when you order or buy stuff for your action. The bolt head switches out also if you want to switch to a cartridge with a different base width. Savageshooters.com is loaded with all of this information; and at this website and there you can find parts in the classifieds section. There you have to be a member though to see the classified section. Small price to pay for the deals in my opinion. Have fun.

The other great thing is that you can do a lot of these changes yourself, and do a switch barrel rig that will run with actions that cost 4 times as much.

lol,i understand your point outdoorsman, a guy at work asked the same thing, here is my reasoning for all this. this way i can have exactly what i want the way i want it that is all i am sure i could get close with some other gun but it seems like there is always something i want different, and if this cost me some more money then i suppose i will just have to deal with that ,but it will be over some period of time and not all at once. but anyhow thanks for the replies.

All stevens are small shank barrels and I would go to savageshooters forum and pay the 12.00 a year to see the whole site,it is beyond worth it.The guy you want to deal with is Northland Supply or stockade stocks(kevin Rayhill. He is reasonable and fun to chat with.He is a walking encyclopedia. Try stockys for your stock choice or stockade as he has takeoff stocks. He probably has take off barrels as well.
