help please

just recently i had a run in with 1 very lucky coyote, he escaped my encore .22-250 not once not twice but 5 yes sadly i missed him for sure 4 times he was hit and knocked down on the 2nd shot but got up and trotted away. my question is with a 45gr jhp where should i 0 for the best overall trajectory. i know the 250 is very flat but if i am dead on at 100yds where will that put me at 2,3,4& maybe 5 if i am lucky? oh and don't worry about wounding shots i plan to practice thoroughly at the longer ranges from now on, it bothers me as much as anyone for somebody even myself to wound an animal no matter what it be. so any help would be greatly appreciated and practiced.

thanks

I don't have any advise on where to set your zero for your bullets, but if you truly don't want to just wound your target animals and want more humane kills, QUIT using the 45 gr. fmj ammo. In my experience with fmj bullets, they have a tendency to go through the animal without major damage (not much in the way of wound cavity) and the animal sometimes doesn't bleed much. Use some lead-tipped bullets, hollowpoint bullets, or even the plastic tipped bullets that will expend their energy inside the target animal instead of passing through. Just my humble opinion and it is probably worth what you paid for it. ;D

i figured i would get that for that typo it was a psp i was using
i will be using the 45grjhp NOT fmj like i mentioned that was a typo. sorry for the confusion.

With that caliber I would zero at 200 or 250 yards. Check the ballistic tables on the Hornady website and it will give you the drop with a 200 yard zero.

Whatever you decide on, I would shoot the gun at those distances to confirm though. Seems like each gun is a little different.

In (MY opinion) Throw the 45 graners away ...Piriod for anything larger than a prairy dog sised game. I am not awair of a 22 cal 45grn bullet that is desined for the speed I asume you are pushing them to performe on that size of game.
I have been shooting coyotes for about 40 years and have lost a few in those years and dont want to loose another one I would try a 50 or 55 grn slug to help with the nock down power needed to ancor tome of the stuborn and some times hard to kill dogs if the shot plasment isent perfect!

Not to critasize just trying to help. I shoot a lot of diffrent guns and cal and I do my homwork befor I take any of them to the killing field. It can be as simpole as shooting a head of cabge to try and simulate bullit performance at 300 yards or a jug of water and a lot cheeper than balistic jeliten and you will have a small window to what your bullet is dooing at difrent ranges

Hope this helps Kevin

You really need to take the rifle out and shoot it at those distances to verify where YOUR rifle is shooting, no one else's will be exactly like yours...
Loose the 45 grain bullets while your at it too......... A 55 grain anything is going to be better at making sure they are dead right now...
Must have been a rather stupid coyote to stand around and let you shoot 5 times at it.. around here if they even think you have a gun, they are long gone...

well at 10 degrees outside that morning i think he was still lookin for the distressed rabbit. he was young, anyhow thanks.

I hate to admit but the remington plhp 50 grain or 55 grain are great pills and really accurate. I use them on woodchucks up in new york state and they are devastating wound cavitys ,I have observed.Clean and humane! I have had great results using ww 748 powder with these bullets, around 35 grains.
