Years back, a friend wanted to size the bases of his .243 AI cases. He had made a bump die, and was neck sizing with a collet die, and had ignored my warnings that the cases would get tight at their bases. Knowing that he is too tight to spring for a custom die, I prowled a local gun show, and found a non carbide RCBS .45 ACP reloading die set. It cost me all of $10 used, and I specifically wanted one without the carbide insert in case the die sized the cases' bases too much and needed to be polished out a little to make an adjustment. I the case of those particular dies (not sure about others) once the guts were removed, what was left was an unobstructed tube with a ring die at its bottom. It worked perfectly. Many years later, that friend passed the tip along to a mutual friend whose 6mm Rem. chamber is too small in the back for his tight neck chamber. This fellow bought a new Lee Carbide .45 ACP die set, and found that he had to do a little lathe work to create the needed clearance in the top of the sizing die. After that was done, it worked perfectly.
