Help on a Montgomery ward rifle plz!

I have a Montgomery ward hawthorne model 760 chambered in 3006 and want to know if any one knows what type of mauser and or other details on this rifle. I would like to put a new stock but have no info on this.

The last one I saw was a commercial FN Mauser. A picture would be a big help...

Let me know if you need any others

It's a military 98 of some flavor. I'm sure someone here on the board who knows military Mauser's will chime in on what country it's from. I'm not sure if it came from Monkey Wards that way or it it's something someone put together. All the Wards I've seen were on Belgian FN commercial actions. Either way any standard 98 Mauser stock should fit.

Here's what I dug up...
Which basically means it was manufactured in Kragujevac, Serbia, under the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and is owned by the Military. Kragujevac is where all the arms, ammunition, and explosives are manufactured for the Former Yugoslavian and now Serbian military (Zastava and Prvi Partizan).

Thanx guys, this should just be a #1 barrel right being that it's from ward's, on Boyds it asks if it a #1 or military barrel, I would also like to eventually put a different barrel also. Any advice on barrels

You can have any barrel you want. Your smith and you can pick the contour you choose. Most popular calibers can be used on the 98. Basically you have a plate full of options. We have built many rifles on the 98, bolt face of a round determines caliber choices. For more info on what we have done with the 98, see this link: http://www.mossbergmvp.com/index.php?threads/mauser-98-project.1341/ Happy shooting

Dude that is awesome, I really wish I had the resources for a project like that. I would like to stay with the 3006 with a fluted mid weight barrel maybe somethin like that with a stock somewhat similar to what I have now but in laminate gray. And the action like y'all did on that project man that is cool.

What you have is a pretty bog-standard sporterized Mauser from the 1960s. With the Redfield scope and mount the rifle is worth maybe 350 and that as a basic shooter. Since you want to restock, and perhaps rebarrel, you'll have far more into it than it will be worth...so... Why not go all out and make it into a high grade custom? Put a shilen #2 in a hot setup cartridge and a high grade Claro stock with all the trimmings.??? Caliber would be your choice but maybe a classic round like the 7X57mm or something???

This would be my 1st ever project like this so ima have a lot of questions. So when I look at Boyds it asks if it's a #1 barrel or military barrel, those being the only 2 choices and being you suggested a #2 shilen what would that fall under.

The #1 stock would be what I choose. The #1 is close to a "featherweight" taper like on some older Winchester 70s. The "2 is one step up from that. If your thinking of a 284 or belted magnum you need a #3 to get a big enough barrel swell. With a #1 inletting you can inlet the channel to your barrel contour. The military barrel channel would be stepped and may leave a gap when inletted. This project will be a lot of work bet can be very rewarding.

I would prolly stay with the 3006 so I think the 2 would be fine and thanx for the input because I would be lost and wouldn't kno where to start.

Equal to the 30-06. Shorter and better suited to togays powders.

You might want to look at this video and see what it is all about.
