help needed with 6XC

I put my LV contour Criterion, 1-8 twist barrel on my Stiller action, Leupold scope, picatinny rail and good rings, headspaced, and glass bedded action and such.

Shooting 105 AMAX's (moly'd), I am having a hard time getting this rifle to group well. Getting about 1 MOA at 100 with H4350, and H4831sc. I finally got two loads with H414 that shoot about 1/2 MOA.

I'm using Win 22-250 brass and Win primers.

I have a little Sako L579 with a sporter barrel in 6XC, that is a 1/2 MOA rifle, most of the time.

Any suggestions?

I'm using 38.8 grains of RL-17 and Fed 215M primers, bullets seated .022 off the lands, Norma brass. You might also try 37 grains of 8208-XBR.

DanS, assuming that you have a 27"+ barrel..... I'd agree with Nomad47. Note his use of "M" primers with the R-17 and Norma brass. Now if it is shorter than 27" I'd recommend you try a faster powder like R-15 or something in that burn rate and go back to the standard primers. From my experience in this caliber the coated bullets really change the ball game so to speak.

And it could be too that that rifle just don't like the 105 A max or its seating depth that you are using. WD

I have some RL-15, but don't have any of the other powders. With my 26" barrel, is there any load data for moly'd 105's with RL-15?

DanS, check your private messages. ;) WD

Could be the moly coating, too. Try some UN-coated 107g SMKs and H4350,,, after cleaning the barrel 'squeaky' clean and free of moly residue.

RL-15 is not "The" powder for that cartridge. H4350 with the 105-107 gr bullets is where I would be investigating.

exactly. why reinvent the wheel. Get some H4350, stick about 38 grs of it in a Win 22-250 fireformed case and a 107SMK or a 105hybrid and go shoot. Run both 20 thous off to start. If that doesnt shoot, scrap the bbl or get a known good trigger puller behind the bolt. :P

Seriously, this isnt rocket science and too many folks have had too much success with this combo to ignore it. (caveat: I am a sling shooters so I dont test loads for .1 accuracy, if its shoots 1/2 MOA or better, I run with it...and every bbl I have shot this combo in has done that, or better).

Surprising how close Mudcat's load is to mine. 105Hybrid, 38.8H4350, Norma brass,F210M for a nice .3" cluster at 200yds.

I know Im a little different but I really like the 115 HBn DTAC with 38.0 grains H4350 and Wolf primers , norma brass. .020 off the lannds on my 1-7.5 Schneider barrel. 26 inches gets me 2920 FPS, and a hammer load. Just shot a 449-24x/450 @ 800, 900, and 1000...(the 1000 was a 149-10x/150) The nine was all me. Sling and Iron Match Rifle.

Sometime in the future I might try the Berger 107 Hybrid but sticking for now with the Sierra 115.

I use near same as MT6. 39 of 4350 Norma brass 115 DTAC Hbn coated. I use the Wolf primer. .5 @ 200 Usually 3" (sometimes more) @800, which is as far as I've tried it. Mine is a 29" Kreiger. The 4350 doesn't seem to have the unexplained flyer that I was getting with RL17.

Depending on the bullet and the altitude, maybe, maybe not. Good part on that in Brian Litzs book for the 6mm and the stability factor of the best case and worst case .

Ya' ,,,, your probably right. I'd always recommend a guy spend $120+ on 500 bullets that might shoot, when all he really needs is a $20-$25 pound of powder. Especially when he's having accuracy problems to begin with. He'll still need a can of H4350.

Well, my previous Schneider 1-8 seemed to handle the sierra 115 just fine, 26 inch and only pushing it 2900. So to tell him it flat out wont cut it is just wrong. Obviously his choice to go for what he wants but I wouldn't make a recommendation just to lead him down the wrong road. In fact if he wants to try some of my DTACS to see for himself I would gladly send him some.
