Help needed surgeon or kmw Inlet/Bottom Metal

Bought a stock that was supposed to be an m5 inlet. After getting a Hawkins m5 I put it in and have big gaps on n both sides of the mag well. Probably 1/8” each side. Front and rear tangs fit well but the gaps are killing me so it leads me to think it’s not an m5 inlet. After much web searching I found that the Surgeon/Kmw inlet is bigger but obviously the actual specs are top secret as I couldn’t find them anywhere. My question is, does anyone have a stock inletted for or have a surgeon or Kmw bottom metal that would be willing to take some measurements for me? I really hate to just throw another $300 for just a guess.

Attached pictures of the gap incase anyone else has some suggestions…

My KMW bottom metal measures 1.256". Have you called emailed Terry at KMW. He is very helpful and responsive to questions.

The difference between the Surgeon bottom metal and the M5 bottom metal is that the Surgeon has less taper from front to back. In essence, it is slightly wider in the front and slightly more wide in the back.

From your photos, excellent by the way, the appearance of the voids on the left and right are a result from poor measurements when the inletting was done, probably by an amateur. The front and back match signify that the error was made while trying to fit the Surgeon and discovering that there is less taper on the Surgeon requiring some small adjustment for the sides. The adjustment got away from whomever tried to make the fit correct.

Normally when I get something in like this, I bed the bottom metal with a little clearance for fitting without having to force the bottom metal to seat. It's not difficult but if you lack the experience most gunsmiths who do bedding will be able to make it right.

Just measured my inlet and it’s 1.256 exactly at the rear. This gives me hope. I’ll try giving Terry or Manners a call Monday. Thanks!

It’s a clean inlet which leads me to think it’s a factory manners inlet. If it was done secondhand then it was definitely done with a mill. The front and rear tang of the bm and the trigger guard fit excellent it’s just oversized on the mag box area. I don’t mind to bed it as I still have to bed the action as well but I’d much rather try to track down the correct bottom metal if possible.

I was near impossible to hold the mic and phone but here’s the front and rear inlet measurements. May be a thou or two off but close enough

Is this a short action?

I have a stock with a short action Surgeon inlet that measures 1.275 " in the rear and 1.265" in the front.

Yeah it’s a short action. Your ptg measures almost the same my Hawkins does which is shown in the first picture with the terrible gaps. Terry Cross sent me the inlet drawing for Kmw bottom metal and it’s very close to what mine measures so I think I’m gonna give one of those a shot

For whatever it's worth, here is a screenshot of my CAD template for inletting for Badger M5 (I've used it for PTG as well). All my dimensions are relative to centering an endmill in a manual mill, so I added the two widths (in green) temporarily before capturing the screen. They seem to match with about 30 thou clearance to the previously posted measurements.

Incase anyone else ever runs into this, here’s the print I got from Terry.
