Help me pull the trigger!

I need a new shooter for hunting and the 2 candidates left standing on the rack after my selection process are 1) a like new barely shot Weatherby outfitter 270win OR a new Sauer 100XT ceracote 270win.

Price difference is not a concern and both of them are way under my 2500$ max budget for an all weather accurate Oregon rifle..

I know Weatherbys but I am buying blind if I choose the Sauer. I like about any thing German ( other than their food) and have read nothing but good stuff, mainly from UK forums, on the Sauer.

Has anyone here held or better yet held and shot a Sauer 100? comments? Thx!

ps: For one reason of other I have already nixxed Sako, Tikka, Nosler, X-bolt, Christensen, Savage, 700, Bergara. I dont think I have missed any.

Haven't shot either of those models, but the Sauer has several positive reviews. Stock was rated better than most synthetic and the action was called a M700 clone, if true that would mean a lot of scope mount options. Accuracy seems to fall in the moa range, very acceptable for hunting rifles. I will only purchase rifles with shoulder/barrel nut threading, the pressed in setups no go for me.

From what I have read the new version Sauer 100's are all threaded. However for me issue is mute as in 40 yrs of hunting I have never shot out a barrel in a lightweight hunting rifle. My gut is the weatherby as it is not a 'conveyor belt' rifle or a degraded version of a top model like tikka vs sako.

the Wby is a Howa right?..

I’m confused a bit here. You have a $2500 budget, is that rifle and scope or just rifle. If it’s just the rifle then why not build your own rifle the way you want it. Action of your choice, barrel from about any major supplier and stock of your liking… you can get prefit barrels for almost all custom actions that I’m aware of and do it all at home.

You have missed the Winchester Model 70, the Rifleman's Rifle. You could buy a stainless M-70 CRF donor rifle and have a good gunsmith chamber you a new barrel and bed it in the stock of your choice for $2500, give or take.

There isn't a more durable or reliable hunting action than a CRF M-70. They feed, extract, and eject exceptionally well. They have a three position safety that blocks the firing pin--there isn't a better safety. Controlled round feed virtually eliminates double feeding due to short stroking, and the claw extractor has VERY positive extraction.

I have several, from .270 to .416 Rem. Their accuracy is excellent, but accuracy is in the barrel, not the action.

Factor new CRF M-70s run $800-$1300, five or take, and they often shoot very well out of the box. However, building a rifle almost always results in a superior firearm.

From what and how you wrote your post, you have already made your choice, so why even ask. Go buy the one you want and be happy.

I have a Mark V Weatherby in the Supervarmint Master that I paid $1500 in 2009. It's a 223 Rem.

Up to that date, it was the most accurate factory rifle I ever purchased. With tailored reloads, sub 1/4" groups were the norm.

A few years ago I purchased a Tikka T3X Varmint. That rifle is on par with the Weatherby accuracy wise with a smoother action, superior extractor design, and equal if not better trigger. The vertical pistol grip aligns the trigger finger much better than a conventional stock making it eaiser to shoot better. Not crazy about the polymer magazine but so far it's held up but I had a Browning X Bolt polymer mag fail after a heavy season of varminting. The Tikka is a great value but the lite weight models in deer cartridges greater than a 243 Win are not fun to shoot a lot off the bench but are excellent field rifles.

I have one Weatherby Vanguard in 223. It's a poor man's Weatherby. It's a decent rifle for the price. The trigger is good not great, the stock is stiff and ok, the extractor system is excellent, and it has an integral metal magazine via floor plate design. The 3 position safety is a nice feature. It has a decent recoil pad, a consideration for the heavier calibers. Mine won't break any benchrest group records but it's good enough for a hunting rifle with tailored reloads at moderate ranges. I use mine to hunt predators with most shot opportunites under 250 yards.

Don't know anything about the Sauer's.

Bottom Line: Tikka's are hard to beat.

I owned a weatherby mark5 chambered in 270 weatherby magnum and regret every day that i sold it. Not knowing much about the Sauer my vote is for Mr Roys product. I personally know of 3 Mark 5 and they all shoot very well with Weatherby ammo and can only imagine how well they would shoot with a well tuned handload.

The Weatherby Outfitter is their Mark V action.
Seeing as it's a 270 Win, it's probably the 6 lug, not the 9 lug.

Still, at an advertized weight of 5,3/4 lbs, THAT'S LIGHT!
