help me pick! PLEASE

I need some advice on what type mounts and rings to put on my rifle. It is a remington 700 short action. It will be outfitted with a 8.5-25-50 VX-III. I have always used standard leupold mounts and rings in the past, are they good enough? Have heard good things about alot of other companies and types, they seem to be pricey. I have heard that Burris signature rings are good? any one use them? what types of rails? Any thoughts and advice is appreciated thanks.

its a factory remington with a heavy barrel..will be used for varmint hunting and some bench match shoooting to 500 yards. I would like to be under $200 for the setup.

what do you guys think about leupolds standard one piece mount with dovetail in front and windage in rear. Do you think the rail and ring setup is better? Remington standard setup vs Farrell rail and Burris sgn. Z rings which should I go with?

A big yes for the Burris signature zee rings/ the only kind I buy now. Lapping not required, no ring marks on scope tube, ability to keep the erector tube close to center by using the off-set ring inserts, easy on & off without losing zero by removing 2 cross-bolt base screws and sliding off, and the ring screws do not have to be "super tight" to securely hold the scope.

I can only speak for myself but I think they suck. They're "fairly sturdy" but I've had one come loose and seen a lot more. The only Leupold one piece base I'd consider is the dual dovetail with Burris double dovetail Signature rings.

Concur with Gunamonth 100%. Double dovetail is VERY secure but it means your rings are "semi-permanently" installed on the rifle, because the rings actually tap themselves into the bases. With double dovetail it's very easy to get the rings slightly mis-aligned.

Single-dovetail with windage rear is a very flimsy mounting system that is prone to problems. All I can say is I wouldn't even consider a rear windage set-up without Burris Signatures--at least they correct misalignment issues. But almost any mount/ring arrangement is preferrable to a "floating" windage rear set-up.

Might I also offer the DedNutz line of single piece base and rings,www.dednutz.com). The single piece includes the bottom part of the ring/
I have a set on my Savage LRPV 30BR bench gun. No POI shift, lightweight, and very well made. Alignment to the factory scope holes was near perfect, and the mount to action fit was excellent.
I checked the website, and they do make 30mm,I think that is the diameter of the VXIII?) rings for around $70.
Mine did not require any lapping. The fit and finish is excellent.

I have also used Near MFG base and rings. Beautiful stuff, and you pay for the superior quality. The base seemed to stick to the action the machining was so precise. Much heavier,1/4" cross bolts) than anything else I have seen save for the huge nightforce/badger types with 3 screws per side for the rings.
I can take my scope off with the rings and reattach it with no change in my POI.
Hope this helps,
Mike
